What's happening in Miami this week?

Miami this week brings daily thunderstorms in thick summer humidity. The Balloon Museum's Pop Air runs at Mana Wynwood Convention Center. Wynwood galleries hold Thursday-night openings. South Beach fills from Friday sunset. Miami Beach and the outdoor sights belong to the morning hours.

Miami in deep summer operates on a heat clock. Morning temperatures sit near 29°C, but 79% humidity pushes the feels-like past 35°C by midday. The daily storm cell tends to build over the Everglades after lunch and reach the coast by mid-afternoon. It drops 20 minutes of warm, heavy rain, then clears to sticky sunshine. Plan outdoor time before noon. The ocean off Virginia Key and South Beach runs about 30°C, more bathwater than refreshing. The real relief is the breeze off Biscayne Bay, which picks up around 4pm after the rain passes. Monday through Wednesday tend to be the quietest beach days at South Beach. The Saturday crowds between 5th and 14th Street make it hard to find open sand after 11am.

Miami's week has a recognizable shape. Wynwood, the former warehouse district north of Downtown, holds gallery openings on Thursday evenings along NW 2nd Avenue between 23rd and 29th Streets. Free wine, air conditioning, and contemporary art from 7pm until 10pm. Friday and Saturday nights shift south to Brickell and South Beach, where Ocean Drive restaurants set tables on the sidewalk by 7pm and the bars on Washington Avenue pick up around 11pm. Sunday mornings are slower. Little Havana's Domino Park on Calle Ocho has its regulars from about 9am, and Versailles on SW 8th Street fills for cafecito and croquetas by 10am. The cafecito runs about $1, sweet and thick in a paper cup smaller than your fist. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, the 1914 estate in Coconut Grove, closes Tuesdays.

This week, the Pop Air inflatable-art exhibition is the standout indoor option in Wynwood, fully climate-controlled against the summer heat. Hard Rock Cafe Miami on Bayside Marketplace is running combo deals with Big Bus Tours and Thriller Speedboat rides. The Biscayne Bay speedboat runs about 45 minutes, with salt spray hitting your face and the Downtown skyline sliding past. The Pérez Art Museum Miami, founded in 1984, sits on the waterfront at Museum Park and opens daily except Wednesday. Its hanging gardens catch the bay breeze, and the second-floor terrace has one of the best free views of PortMiami. Bayfront Park, open since 1925 on that same waterfront, runs free fitness classes most mornings at 7am before the pavement starts radiating.

A few things that catch first-timers off guard in Miami. The neighborhoods spread across 15 miles of coastline. A walk from South Beach to Wynwood takes over an hour in the midday heat. The Metromover is free and air-conditioned for the Downtown-Brickell loop, but for anything else budget $15-25 per rideshare between major areas. Tap water tastes faintly of sulfur in some older Miami Beach buildings. Restaurants in South Beach tend to add an automatic 18% gratuity for all party sizes, and visitors often tip on top of it without realizing. Dinner in Brickell runs $25-45 per person at mid-range spots. Little Havana runs cheaper, $12-18 for a full plate of ropa vieja with rice, beans, and maduros at the counters along Calle Ocho. Those fried plantains are crisp on the outside with a soft caramel center, about $3 at most counters.
