Where should I stay in Antalya?

Stay in Kaleiçi on your first visit. The walled quarter runs from Hadrian's Gate (built 130 AD) south to Hidirlik Tower, a 2nd-century Roman structure above the marina. The whole area is about 800 meters end to end. Yivli Minare Mosque, built in 1230, stands at its center. You'll hear the call to prayer bounce off limestone walls while you eat breakfast on a rooftop terrace. Down at the harbor, the air still carries salt and diesel from the morning tour boats. Boutique hotels here occupy restored Ottoman mansions with stone courtyards and whitewashed rooms. Expect $50-90 per night for a well-reviewed boutique, $120-180 for a four-star with pool access. The AntRay tram stops at Üçkapılar, a 7-minute walk from Hadrian's Gate. It connects to Konyaaltı Beach in 15 minutes and the otogar in 25.

Konyaaltı is the pick if you want a modern apartment over a historic hotel. The district stretches west along a 7-kilometer pebble beach. Antalya Museum (founded 1922, one of Turkey's largest archaeology collections) sits at the eastern end near the Konyaaltı tram stop. Residential towers line Barınaklar Caddesi, and a 1-bedroom with a view of the Beydağları mountains runs $40-70 per night on short-term platforms. The beach promenade fills up after 6pm with families, tea vendors, and the warm smell of roasted corn from the carts near the Migros mall entrance. Restaurants here tend to be 20-30% cheaper than Kaleiçi, and you're a 15-minute tram ride from the old town. The trade-off is atmosphere. Konyaaltı feels like a Turkish beach suburb, not a Mediterranean port town.

Skip Lara Beach for a first trip unless you specifically want an all-inclusive resort where you never leave the compound. Lara sits 12 kilometers east of Kaleiçi. The strip is almost entirely gated resorts that charge $100-250 per night. There's no walkable town center, no tram connection, and a taxi to Kaleiçi costs around 400-500 TRY (roughly $9-11 at current rates). Belek, another 25 kilometers further east, is golf-resort territory at $150-350 per night. Both make sense for a week of poolside relaxation but will leave you stranded if you actually want to see Antalya. Mind you, the Lara resorts do have their own sandy beach access, which Kaleiçi hotels lack entirely. If beach time matters, Konyaaltı is the compromise.

Book Kaleiçi hotels directly when possible. Many of the family-run mansions offer 10-15% lower rates through their own websites than through aggregators, and a quick WhatsApp message in English usually gets a reply within hours. June temperatures currently sit around 23°C at night and climb to 33-35°C by early afternoon, so air conditioning is non-negotiable. Check for it in Kaleiçi's older buildings, where some ground-floor rooms still rely on ceiling fans. Antalya Airport (AYT) is 13 kilometers from Kaleiçi. The Havaş shuttle bus runs every 30 minutes to the city center for about 150 TRY ($3.25). A taxi from AYT to Kaleiçi runs 600-800 TRY ($13-17), though drivers at the arrivals rank sometimes ask for more. Agree on the fare before you get in.
