What should I avoid in Lidingo?

The biggest first-timer error is booking a bed on Lidingö and treating it as central Stockholm. The island sits east of the city across Lilla Värtan, and every trip into town runs through Ropsten, the last stop on the T13 red line. Hotels here tend to be conference properties along the shore, quiet after 9pm and a long walk from a restaurant, so sleep in Östermalm or Norrmalm and come over for half a day. Mind you, some listings pad Lidingö with sights that sit elsewhere. Strandvägen is a waterfront street in Östermalm, on the Stockholm side of the water. The Hargs bro runic inscriptions and Uppland Runic Inscription 181, both registered as monuments in Fornminnesregistret, appear to stand on the Uppland mainland north of Stockholm, so don't spend an afternoon hunting for them from the Lidingöbanan tram.

At Arlanda, ignore any driver who waves you over inside Terminal 5. Swedish taxi prices are unregulated, so check the yellow-and-white comparison price sticker on the rear window before you get in. Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir and Sverigetaxi tend to quote a fixed fare to the city. Public transport is the safer call. An SL single costs about 43 SEK, roughly 4.30 USD at the 12 October 2026 rate of 10.0139 SEK to the dollar, and it should cover the metro to Ropsten plus tram 21 onward within 75 minutes. Tap a contactless bank card at the gates. Don't board tram 21 without a valid ticket, because SL inspectors work this line and the penalty fare is likely around 1,500 SEK. Cash is the other trap: many cafes around Lidingö centrum are card only, so skip the exchange counter at Arlanda.

Millesgården is worth the crossing, and the one mistake that catches visitors is arriving on a Monday: the sculpture park at Herserud tends to close on Mondays outside summer, so check the hours before you leave Ropsten. Supermarkets on Lidingö sell beer up to 3.5% only. Avoid the last weekend of September unless you are running: Lidingöloppet, a 30 km cross-country race, fills Ropsten and tram 21 with tens of thousands of runners, and you'll hear the loudspeakers at Koltorp from well down the road. Daylight is the quieter problem. By mid-October the sun sets before 18:00 in Stockholm, and the shore path at Kyrkviken appears to be poorly lit in stretches, so finish coastal walks by 17:00.
