Where should I stay in Ubud?

Central Ubud, the 500-meter stretch between Ubud Palace and the Sacred Monkey Forest sanctuary, is the right base for a first visit. You can walk to Pura Taman Saraswati's lotus pond in three minutes, reach the Ubud Art Market before the tour buses arrive at 10am, and eat roast suckling pig at Ibu Oka on Jalan Suweta or crispy duck at Bebek Bengil on Jalan Hanoman without needing a driver. Guesthouses on Jalan Bisma run $25-50 per night and tend to include breakfast. Mid-range pool villas on Jalan Kajeng or Jalan Hanoman cost $60-120. The trade-off is real. Motorbike traffic along Jalan Raya Ubud grinds to a standstill by 11am, and the exhaust mixes with incense from the morning canang sari offerings. By day three, the exhaust wins. The air smells of frangipani at dawn and petrol by noon. But the convenience is hard to beat when you have four or five days and want to cover ground without renting a scooter.

Penestanan sits on a ridge ten minutes uphill from the Campuhan Ridge Walk's starting point, west of the center. The walk up from central Ubud takes about 15 minutes on a steep concrete path past warungs selling Rp 25,000 nasi campur, roughly $1.40 at the mid-August 2026 exchange rate. Mornings are cool here. You'll hear roosters and gamelan practice drifting up from the valley, not traffic. Guesthouses with rice-paddy views run $30-70, and a handful of newer villa compounds with infinity pools sit in the $80-150 range. The Campuhan Ridge Walk itself starts at Pura Gunung Lebah, a Hindu temple at the confluence of two river tributaries. At 6:30am the grass is still wet and the light hits the palm canopy from below. It is the single best free thing to do in Ubud, and staying in Penestanan puts you at its doorstep before the photo crowd arrives around 8am.

Nyuh Kuning, the village directly south of the Monkey Forest's rear gate, is where Ubud gets quiet. The streets are swept clean, the stone walls are covered in moss, and at dusk the temperature drops to around 23°C with the smell of woodsmoke and wet earth settling into the valley. Guesthouses here cost $15-35, some run by families who have lived in the village for generations. You're a 10-minute walk from the forest and 20 minutes from central Ubud, which feels like enough distance after a day in the crowds. For the other end of the budget, the Sayan river valley about 4 km west holds Ubud's luxury tier. Four Seasons Sayan starts around $450 per night and sits in a gorge so steep that the lobby is on the roof. Viceroy Bali, further up the ridge near Lod Tunduh, runs $300-600. Both require a car or driver for everything, and a round trip into town costs Rp 100,000-150,000.

Ubud has no train, no public bus worth relying on, and taxis operate under a local transport cartel that blocks ride-hailing apps like Grab and Gojek from making pickups within the town center. To book a Grab, walk to the designated pickup zone near the Coco Supermarket on Jalan Raya Pengosekan, about 15 minutes south of the market. A private driver for a full day of temple visits to Tirta Empul, Gunung Kawi, and the Tegallalang terraces costs Rp 500,000-700,000, about $28-39. Scooter rental runs Rp 70,000-100,000 per day, but the roads between Ubud and the main sights are narrow, steep, and shared with trucks. If you have not ridden a motorbike in Southeast Asian traffic before, Ubud's ravine-edge roads are not the place to learn. Book accommodation that includes airport transfer from Ngurah Rai International. The drive takes 90 minutes to two hours depending on the traffic through Denpasar, and arriving after dark on unfamiliar roads is a bad start to any trip.
