What's the must-see thing in Jakarta?
The National Monument, Monas, in Merdeka Square. A 132-metre marble tower topped with 35 kg of gold leaf and the city's only real orientation point. Go when it opens at 8am. By mid-morning the queue wraps the ground-floor lobby and the observation deck wait passes 45 minutes.
Monas is the answer. The marble-clad column in Merdeka Square was completed in 1975 after 14 years of construction, and the gold-covered flame at its peak catches the early sun before the 33°C midday heat sets in. The observation deck at 115 metres is Jakarta's only vantage point where the city's geography becomes legible. North, the terracotta-coloured rooflines of Kota Tua. South, green canopy rolls toward Ragunan Zoo. Entry costs 20,000 IDR, roughly $1.13 at current exchange rates. The elevator holds about 12 people at a time, which is why the early opening matters. By 10am the ground-floor lobby fills with school groups, and the square's 80 hectares of open pavement throw heat back at you from every surface. The base level houses a diorama hall with 51 scenes of Indonesian history, lit by humming fluorescent tubes and cooled to a temperature that makes the sweat on your arms go cold. Allow 90 minutes. The diorama hall alone takes 30.
The National Museum of Indonesia sits about 800 metres west of Monas on Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat. Founded in 1778, it holds the oldest institutional collection in Southeast Asia. The ground floor carries Hindu-Buddhist gold artifacts from the 8th through 15th centuries, including pieces from the Wonoboyo hoard, 34 kg of gold objects pulled from a Central Javanese rice paddy in 1990. Upper floors cover textiles and ethnographic pieces from 34 provinces. The facility does not meet the presentation standards of comparable European collections. Lighting runs dim, labels sometimes stop at Bahasa Indonesia, and the air conditioning on the second floor fights a losing battle against the afternoon heat. That said, the collection itself is irreplaceable, and the 50,000 IDR entry fee (about $2.82) makes it likely the best-value museum day in the region. Allow 2 hours.
Kota Tua, Jakarta's colonial quarter, sits 6 km north of Monas. The area around Taman Fatahillah square preserves what remains of Dutch Batavia, the colonial capital that governed the East Indies from 1619 until 1949. The Jakarta History Museum occupies the former Stadhuis, built in 1710. Inside, the air smells like damp stone and old teak regardless of the season. Entry is 5,000 IDR, about $0.28. The collection runs modest compared to the National Museum. Colonial-era furniture, VOC ceramics, a few prison cells in the basement with original shackles. The building does the heavy lifting. Thick walls drop the temperature a good 5 degrees below the street. On weekends, the surrounding square fills with street photographers who rent Dutch-era bicycles for 20,000 IDR per half hour. Café Batavia occupies a building from around 1805 on the northwest corner. The coffee costs 35,000 to 50,000 IDR per cup. You are paying for the colonial-era shuttered windows and ceiling fans, not the beans.
Skip Taman Mini Indonesia Indah unless you have children under 10 and 3 hours to fill. The 150-hectare cultural park, also completed in 1975, presents each of Indonesia's provinces as a miniature pavilion. It sounds impressive on paper. In practice, distances between pavilions require an internal shuttle at 30,000 IDR per ride, and the food court options taste like airport canteens. Ragunan Zoo, founded in 1864, covers 140 hectares in Pasar Minggu, 16 km south of central Jakarta. Komodo dragons and orangutans live here, and entry costs 4,000 IDR ($0.23), which is near free. But the enclosures date from mid-20th century designs, signage is sparse, and in September the feels-like temperature at ground level reaches 38°C by noon. Worth noting for families (Jakarta scores 5.8/10 for family friendliness, see /research/family-friendliness/), but neither site belongs on your first day. Your first day is Monas at opening, the National Museum by mid-morning, Kota Tua by early afternoon. The route runs south to north, into the sea breeze as the day heats up.
The top three
National Monument (Monas)
Jakarta's only real orientation point. At 20,000 IDR entry (about $1.13), the observation deck makes the city's full layout readable. Go at opening and the rest of the trip falls into place.
National Museum of Indonesia
Founded in 1778, the oldest museum in Southeast Asia. The Wonoboyo gold hoard alone justifies the visit. Sits 800 metres from Monas, so you can walk between them the same morning. Entry is 50,000 IDR.
Kota Tua and Jakarta History Museum
The old Dutch colonial quarter 6 km north of Monas preserves what remains of Batavia. The 1710 Stadhuis costs 5,000 IDR to enter. Café Batavia sits in a circa-1805 building on Taman Fatahillah square.
