When's the best time to visit Austin in 2026?

Book the first two weeks of November if you can. Austin's November highs average about 72°F (22°C) and lows sit near 50°F (10°C), jacket weather for the 8am line at Franklin Barbecue on East 11th Street, where post oak smoke drifts over the queue for three hours before the doors open. By then ACL Festival has finished its second weekend in Zilker Park, and the Formula 1 weekend at Circuit of the Americas usually falls in October too, so hotel rates around the Capitol and Rainey Street come back down once both are over. One trap: on University of Texas home-game Saturdays, about 100,000 fans in burnt orange fill Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, and rooms near campus get expensive fast, so check the Longhorns schedule before you pick your weekend. Barton Springs Pool stays at 68°F (20°C) all year, and in November that feels like a cold slap.

April is the strong runner-up. Highs reach about 80°F (27°C), and from late March to mid-April bluebonnets line US 290 west toward Johnson City, about an hour's drive out. Mid-March is a different story: during SXSW, the closed blocks of Sixth Street throb with bass from every patio, wristbands sell out, and downtown rooms can cost three times their usual rate, so unless you're going to SXSW, arrive the week after it ends. One note on May: it's one of Austin's wettest months, with roughly 4.5 inches of rain, and the thunderstorms can flood low-water crossings along Shoal Creek within an hour.

June, July and August are the months to avoid: highs hover around 95 to 98°F (35 to 37°C), the cicadas drone in the live oaks along Lady Bird Lake, and heat comes off the Congress Avenue pavement well after sunset. Summer does have one real draw. About 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats live under the Congress Avenue Bridge, and the colony peaks in August, pouring out at dusk with a sharp musky smell and a rush of wings. If summer is your only window, spend middays indoors in the air conditioning at the Blanton Museum of Art and the LBJ Library on the UT campus. Save Lake Austin and the bridge for after 7pm.

December through February is cheaper and mild, with highs around 62°F (17°C), and the Trail of Lights runs in Zilker Park through December. The catch is cedar fever: pollen from Ashe juniper in the Hill Country peaks in January and can leave first-time visitors with itchy eyes and a scratchy throat, so pack an antihistamine. Freezes are rare but serious. In February 2021, Winter Storm Uri left much of Austin without power for several days.
