How do I get to Cappadocia?

Two airports serve Cappadocia, and picking the right one matters more than you might expect. Kayseri Erkilet (ASR) sits 75 km east of Göreme and handles the bulk of domestic traffic. Turkish Airlines runs 4-6 daily flights from Istanbul to ASR year-round, with Pegasus adding 2-3 budget departures from Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen. Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) is closer at 40 km from Göreme, but flights are fewer. Maybe 2-3 a day in summer, and schedules thin out between November and March. Worth noting, NAV's smaller runway means it occasionally closes in winter fog, and passengers get rerouted to Kayseri. If your hotel is in Göreme or Uçhisar, NAV saves 30 minutes of driving through dry plateau. If you're staying in Ürgüp or heading south toward Kaymaklı, ASR is the more logical arrival.

No airline flies nonstop to Cappadocia from outside Turkey. Every international visitor connects through Istanbul (IST) or, less commonly, Ankara Esenboğa (ESB). From the US East Coast, figure 12-14 hours total via Istanbul on Turkish Airlines at $800-1,300 round-trip. The West Coast adds 3-4 hours and $100-200 to the fare. From London Heathrow, Turkish Airlines and British Airways both fly to IST in about 3.5 hours, with the IST-to-ASR hop adding 1h 15min. Total London fare runs £400-700 depending on season. The cheapest window tends to be late October through mid-December, before the Christmas spike. Pegasus offers the budget alternative from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) to ASR at roughly half the Turkish Airlines price, though there's no through-checked luggage. One budget move. Book the Istanbul-to-Cappadocia leg separately on Pegasus to save $60-80 versus a Turkish Airlines through-fare. You'll need to collect bags at IST and re-check at SAW if mixing carriers.

The overnight bus from Istanbul to Nevşehir covers 730 km in about 11 hours and costs 600-900 TRY (around $13-19 at current rates). Metro Turizm and Süha Turizm run reliable services from Istanbul Esenler Otogar, with reclining seats and hot tea that soften the overnight haul. The bus drops you at Nevşehir otogar, where a dolmuş takes 20 minutes to Göreme for 40-50 TRY. From Ankara, it's 4.5 hours by bus at 300-500 TRY, or the YHT high-speed train covers Ankara to Kayseri in about 4.5 hours for 200-350 TRY. To be fair, overland is a real option only if you enjoy watching the Anatolian steppe go flat and golden under a pink-orange dusk, or if your flight timing doesn't work. For the last leg from either airport, most cave hotels in Göreme and Uçhisar arrange shuttle pickups for 200-400 TRY per person. Confirm before arrival. Taxis run 800-1,200 TRY from ASR to Göreme and 500-700 TRY from NAV.

The temperature swing catches first-timers off guard. Cappadocia sits at 1,000 meters on the central Anatolian plateau. Summer days hit 30-35°C, but nights drop to 12-15°C. You'll step off the plane into dry, mineral-scented air that smells nothing like coastal Turkey. The landscape is all brown rock and pale gold tuff, valleys carved in every direction under a wide sky. Book a dawn balloon flight for your second morning. At $180-250 per person through operators like Royal Balloon or Butterfly Balloons in Göreme, it's the one expense nobody regrets. Stay in Göreme rather than Ürgüp or Avanos for the early pickup. The 4:30 AM van collection is painful enough without a 30-minute transfer. Grab a SIM or eSIM before you leave Istanbul. Cell coverage around Zelve and the Ihlara Valley tends to be patchy, and offline maps earn their keep on the narrow roads between Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı.
