When's the best time to visit Krakow in 2026?

May and September. Those are your months for Krakow's Rynek Główny without the August crowds or the January wind chill that drops to -6°C. Late May brings 20°C afternoons and daylight until 20:45, long enough to walk from Kazimierz to Wawel Hill after dinner and still hear the trumpeter play the hejnał from St. Mary's Basilica tower. September offers similar temperatures with fewer tour groups. The linden trees along Planty Park start turning golden by the third week. Hotel rates in Kazimierz sit around 350-500 PLN per night for a decent mid-range room in these months, compared to 600-800 PLN in peak August. June is nearly as good, though afternoon thunderstorms roll in 2-3 times a week and the cobblestones on ul. Floriańska get slick fast.

July and August bring 28-32°C days to a city built for cooler weather. The Cloth Hall's upper gallery has no air conditioning. Wieliczka Salt Mine stays at a constant 14°C underground, which sounds like relief until you're in a queue of 200 people at the entrance on ul. Daniłowicza. Schindler's Factory on ul. Lipowa sells out 2-3 weeks ahead in August. The cobblestones on Grodzka radiate stored heat back at you by 14:00, and the smell of horse carriages on Rynek Główny gets genuinely rank in the warmth. That said, July does bring the Jewish Culture Festival to Kazimierz, usually the last week of June into early July, which fills ul. Szeroka with live klezmer until midnight. Worth it if you plan around it.

January and February average -2°C with frequent overcast skies. Days end by 15:45. The upside is that Wawel Castle's State Rooms might have 30 visitors instead of 300, and you can get a table at Pod Baranem on Rynek Główny without a reservation. The Planty gardens are bare and the Vistula embankment gets icy underfoot. December is a different calculation. The Christmas market runs from late November through December 26 on Rynek Główny. If you're picking one week, aim for the second or third week of September. Jagiellonian University's term starts October 1, so the student population hasn't fully returned. Ojców National Park sits 25 minutes north by bus 304 from Kraków Główny, and its limestone cliffs along the Prądnik Valley catch low September sun in ways that June's overhead light cannot match. One warning about April. Easter brings a full week of Polish school holidays, and domestic tourists fill Krakow's Stare Miasto to capacity.
