Can I leave the airport on a layover in Krakow?

The train from KRK drops you at Kraków Główny in under 20 minutes. Services run roughly every half hour from early morning until around 23:30. From the station, the southern edge of Rynek Główny is a 12-minute walk through the Planty park ring. A taxi to the Old Town costs 80-100 PLN ($22-27 USD) and takes 20-25 minutes depending on traffic near the A4 exit. Factor in 10-15 minutes for Schengen immigration if you're arriving from outside the zone, and budget 90 minutes for return security. That arithmetic gives you roughly two usable hours on a five-hour connection, three and a half on a seven-hour one. Under five hours, stay airside. The terminal has a passable Relay cafe near departures and free Wi-Fi, and that honestly beats a panicked sprint.

With five to seven hours, keep it tight around the Rynek. The square, laid out in 1257, is one of the largest medieval market squares in Europe at roughly 200 by 200 meters. St. Mary's Basilica sits on the northeast corner, and its trumpet call, the hejnał, sounds from the taller tower every hour. You can hear it clearly from anywhere on the cobblestones. Walk south 15 minutes along Grodzka street and you reach Wawel Hill, where the castle has stood since 1001 and the cathedral since 1020. You won't have time for the full castle interior on a layover, but the courtyard is free and open. The view down to the Wisła river is worth the walk. Cold stone underfoot, the echo off the Renaissance arcade walls, and the sudden quiet after the noise of the square. Feels like a different city.

If your window stretches past seven hours, Kazimierz is a 10-minute walk southeast from Wawel. The neighborhood runs along Szeroka and Józefa streets, and it's where the city's solo-traveler social life tends to concentrate. Late August evenings settle around 18°C here, comfortable enough to sit outside at Alchemia on Estery 5, where candle-lit wooden tables and the smell of melting wax have been pulling in travelers since the late 1990s. Cold Żywiec on tap runs about 14 PLN a glass. The 31st Summer Jazz Festival is on this week, with Jorgos Skolias playing at Alchemia on Thursday August 27. That's the kind of night where sitting alone at the bar is normal. For food, grab a zapiekanka from the stands in Plac Nowy, 12-18 PLN. The warm cheese pulls apart in strings, and you eat it standing at the circular hall with everyone else. No reservation. No table for two required.

The zloty sits at 3.68 to the dollar as of late August 2026, making a layover meal and transport run about $15-20 total. Contactless cards work almost everywhere, including on the train from KRK. You likely won't need cash at all.
