What's happening in Cebu this week?

Cebu's week turns on Friday, when novena masses pack the Minor Basilica of the Holy Child from dawn, so plan church visits on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday before 8am. Mid-afternoon thunderstorms tend to build over the hills, payday weekends after the 15th and month-end crowd SM and Ayala malls, and several museums close on Mondays.

Friday belongs to the Santo Niño. The Minor Basilica of the Holy Child, a National Cultural Treasure, holds novena masses through the whole day, and by 9am the plaza off Osmeña Boulevard is packed shoulder to shoulder. The candle sellers in yellow shirts will dance a short prayer for you for a 20 to 50 peso tip, while the air smells of hot wax and sampaguita garlands and the sound system carries the hymns out to Magallanes Street. Magellan's Cross stands in its kiosk about 100 metres away, so do both on the same visit. If you'd rather see the courtyard half empty, come on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday before 8am, when the ceiling fans of the Pilgrim Center are louder than the crowd. The gate guards do turn away shorts above the knee and sleeveless tops.

Monday is the weak day for museums: the National Museum of the Philippines (Cebu) and the Cathedral Museum of Cebu tend to close, so don't build a first-timer's Monday around them. Spend it at Fort San Pedro, a 10-minute walk from the basilica, which opens daily. The fort's coral-stone walls feel cool to the touch in the morning and hot by 2pm. The Cebu Taoist Temple in Beverly Hills is also open daily; a Grab from downtown currently costs roughly 200 to 300 pesos, and from the hilltop you look down over Lahug. The 81 steps up to the temple are easier before 10am.

Weather sets the daily schedule in Cebu's rainy season. The most recent Open-Meteo reading, taken at 1am, recorded fog, 98% humidity and 24.6°C that felt like 29.9°C, and daytime is stickier still. Storm cells tend to build over the Cebu hills from about 3pm, so do your walking in the morning and keep the afternoon for indoor stops. Traffic follows its own weekly pattern: Friday from 5pm to 8pm is the worst slot of the week on the Osmeña and Marcelo Fernan bridges from Mactan, and an airport transfer that takes 40 minutes on a Tuesday morning can run past 90. The 15th and the last day of each month are paydays, and those weekends fill SM City Cebu, SM Seaside and Ayala Center Cebu. Avoid the malls then.

Evenings run on grilled pork. Sugbo Mercado at IT Park in Lahug runs its food stalls from late afternoon, Thursday to Sunday, and that's where we'd point you for an easy first night. Larsian, near Fuente Osmeña Circle, is the cheaper and smokier option: you'll smell the charcoal before you see the stalls, and skewers with hanging puso rice usually cost 20 to 40 pesos each. At 1 USD to about 63 PHP, dinner for two rarely passes 500 pesos. Sunday is the basilica's other busy day, with masses running from early morning, while Colon Street, often called the oldest street in the Philippines, tends to run quieter on Sunday mornings than on any weekday and jeepney traffic downtown stays lighter until about 10am.
