Is Montego Bay good for digital nomads in 2026?

Montego Bay rates 3.8/10 for digital-nomad suitability (sourced from TTDI's editorial rubric), and Flow or Digicel fibre in Ironshore and Rose Hall can reach 100 Mbps. Power cuts, almost no coworking, and a realistic US$2,400 monthly budget are what pull the rating down. Live in Ironshore, keep a Digicel SIM as a hotspot, and plan your stay around your entry stamp rather than an extension.

Check the internet before anything else, because rental listings in St James often overstate it. Flow and Digicel both sell fibre in Ironshore, Rose Hall and Bogue, and a good line tests 80 to 150 Mbps at 7 am but can fall to around 20 Mbps by 8 pm, when the whole of Ironshore is streaming. Before you pay, ask the host which provider they use and for a speedtest screenshot from that week. Copper DSL in Mount Salem or Reading is a much slower service. Power from JPS is the bigger risk: outages of two to four hours hit the parish a few times a month, and more often from June to November. Hurricane Melissa in October 2025 left parts of western Jamaica without power for weeks. Make sure any unit you rent has an inverter or a generator. You'll hear an outage before your screen shows it: the AC rattles to a stop, the room turns sticky within 10 minutes, and the neighbours' generators start coughing along the lane.

For a month, Ironshore is the best base. Expect US$1,000 to US$1,500 for a one-bedroom with a washer, and Fairview Shopping Centre in Bogue is a 15-minute drive for groceries, banks and a pharmacy. Check the washer yourself, because coin laundromats are close to nonexistent in Montego Bay. Gloucester Avenue, the Hip Strip, is fun for a weekend and wearing for a month: bass from the bars thumps until about 2 am, and vendors on the stretch by Doctor's Cave Beach are persistent. Rose Hall villas are quiet, smell of cut grass and sea salt, and cost US$1,800 or more, but they need a car because the nearest proper supermarket is roughly 20 minutes away. Wikivoyage's safety section advises against walking around downtown and Sam Sharpe Square after dark, and we agree.

There is no coworking scene to speak of, so plan around that. The Starbucks on Gloucester Avenue has strong air conditioning, outlets along the wall, and staff who won't hurry you out, though on cruise-ship days at the Montego Bay Freeport it fills from about 10 am to 2 pm and the noise from the line makes calls hard. The St James Parish Library is free and quiet, but its wifi struggles with a video call. The workable alternative is a day pass at one of the Rose Hall resorts, usually US$80 to US$150: dependable wifi, a lobby chair and lunch, with the sound of the surf behind your calls. Book through the front desk, not on the day at the gate.

Budget about US$2,400 a month: US$1,200 in rent, US$450 in groceries, around US$500 for a cheap rental car or regular taxis, and the rest for eating out. Groceries cost more than nomads expect because so much is imported, and at 159 JMD to the US dollar, a JMD 1,500 box of cereal is close to US$10. Eating locally saves money. A plate of jerk pork with festival at Scotchies on the Falmouth road costs around US$12, and the pimento smoke clings to your shirt for an hour. Solo-traveler safety in Montego Bay rates 3.2/10 (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index). St James has been under repeated states of emergency since 2018, so after dark use licensed taxis with red PPV plates instead of flagging cars. Between work blocks, the Rose Hall Great House tour is the best short trip.

Visa options

Jamaica has no digital nomad visa. US, Canadian, UK and most EU passport holders enter without a visa, and the officer at Sangster International writes your permitted stay on the stamp, often 30 to 90 days. Ask for the full period and show an onward ticket. Extensions are discretionary, cost a fee, and go through PICA. Remote work for an overseas employer is a legal grey area. Any Jamaican client requires a work permit from the Ministry of Labour.
