Is Montego Bay family-friendly?

Montego Bay scores 6.2/10 for family friendliness (see the TTDI Family-Friendliness Index). Reef-calm beach water, hand-feeding hummingbirds and bamboo river rafting all work for kids aged 3 and up. The city earns its deductions too: broken pavements, taxis with no child seats, and a local kitchen that runs on Scotch bonnet pepper. Base the family in Rose Hall, where the resort pools and kids' clubs are.

Doctor's Cave Beach on Gloucester Avenue is the easiest beach day in town. It sits inside the Montego Bay Marine Park reef, so the swell stays low and a toddler can wade 20 metres out. Entry costs roughly US$8 for adults and less for children, and that fee covers toilets, showers and lifeguards, none of which you get at the free Dead End Beach beside Sangster International Airport. Kids aged 4 to 10 tend to love Dead End anyway, because jets roar in low over the sand every few minutes. Rocklands Bird Sanctuary in Anchovy is about 25 minutes inland, and children there hold a sugar-water bottle while doctor-bird hummingbirds hover close enough to feel the wings buzz. Kids roughly 6 and up get more from a bamboo raft on the Martha Brae River near Falmouth, 40 minutes east, where a captain poles you downstream for about an hour on cool green water under bamboo arches.

A day built around a nap might run like this. Morning adventure means Rocklands or the Martha Brae, leaving by 8 am, because by 11 am the October humidity (89% even at midnight on 20 October) wilts a 4-year-old fast. For lunch and the nap, aim to be back at the hotel by 12:30. The gentler afternoon is a 45-minute glass-bottom boat over the Marine Park coral gardens, with preschoolers staying glued to the glass as the hull fills with the smell of sunscreen and diesel. Rose Hall Great House, the Georgian mansion on the coast road east of the airport, runs daytime tours that tend to hold children 8 and up, though its evening ghost tour about Annie Palmer, the 'White Witch of Rose Hall', will likely cost a nervous 6-year-old a night's sleep.

The stroller verdict is no. The Hip Strip has broken kerbs, open drains and stretches with no pavement at all, and downtown around Sam Sharpe Square is packed with handcarts and honking route taxis. Bring a soft carrier for under-3s and save a light umbrella stroller for resort paths. Licensed taxis carry red PPV plates, but almost none have child seats, so book a transfer that confirms a seat in writing or pack a travel booster. Outside resort lobbies and the paid beaches, changing tables are rare. In Rose Hall, the Hilton's Sugar Mill Falls water park and Half Moon's kids' village are 15 to 20 minutes from the airport, and they are the strongest reason to stay out there. Ask for a confirmed two-bedroom suite or connecting rooms. Plenty of Montego Bay 'family rooms' turn out to be one king bed and a rollaway.

Food is where Montego Bay gets hard with kids. Scotchie's on the North Coast Highway in Ironshore smokes its jerk over pimento wood, and the Scotch bonnet heat goes on hot, so order chicken with the sauce on the side, plus festival, a sweet fried dumpling that most kids eat by the handful. Juici Patties sells a patty in coco bread for around J$500, roughly US$3 at 159 Jamaican dollars to the US dollar, and the mild cheese patty works for picky eaters. Roadside vendors on the A1 cut green coconuts open with a machete, and that cold, faintly sweet water is the best hydration in the heat. Peanut porridge is a breakfast staple in St James, but street stalls never label allergens, so carry printed allergy cards.

Skip list. Dunn's River Falls and Mystic Mountain are both in Ocho Rios, about 90 minutes each way, and the slick climb at the falls defeats most under-5s. Chukka's zipline and ATV tours near Montego Bay set age floors, usually around 6 for ziplining and 16 to drive an ATV, and you may not see them until checkout. Charles Gordon Market downtown is loud, hot and almost shadeless. Hurricane Melissa hit western Jamaica in October 2025, so check that an operator is running before you pay a deposit. Hurricane season lasts until 30 November, which makes free-cancellation bookings worth the small premium.

6/10 family-friendliness rating

Streets are uneven; baby carriers travel better than strollers.

Child safety notes

Stick to the Hip Strip, Rose Hall, and the resort zones. St James parish has seen repeated states of emergency over gang violence, and neighbourhoods such as Flankers and Mount Salem are off-limits. Use red-plated PPV taxis. At Dead End Beach, sea urchins sit on the rocky patches, so pack water shoes. Lifeguards are at the paid beaches, not the free ones. Mix baby formula with bottled water.
