What's happening in Nassau this week?

Nassau's week runs on the cruise schedule at Prince George Wharf. When five or more ships are docked, Bay Street is packed from 9am to 5pm, so spend those hours at Ardastra Gardens or Fort Montagu and save downtown for after 5pm. Friday and Saturday nights belong to the Arawak Cay Fish Fry. On Sundays, most shops close.

Nassau follows the ship calendar, not an events calendar, and Prince George Wharf can berth six or more ships at once. On a heavy day that likely means 15,000 to 20,000 passengers walking from Rawson Square into Bay Street between 9am and 4pm, ship horns echoing off the pink government buildings, vendors calling out from the Straw Market, the pavement outside it going shoulder-tight. Check the Nassau Cruise Port schedule the night before. On a five-ship day, go west to Ardastra Gardens or east to Fort Montagu in the morning, then walk Bay Street after 5pm, once the last horns sound and downtown thins out to office workers waiting for jitneys. Lighter ship days, often midweek, are the ones for the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas on West Hill Street and the Queen's Staircase nearby. The gallery tends to close on Mondays, so plan it for Tuesday through Saturday.

Evenings run on a different clock. The Arawak Cay Fish Fry is a row of painted shacks on West Bay Street, about 2 km west of downtown, and it is quiet on a Monday. By 8pm on a Friday, Bahamian families have arrived and speakers outside Twin Brothers and Goldie's push rake-and-scrape and soca across the car park. Order a conch salad at Goldie's first: raw conch diced with tomato, onion, bird pepper and sour orange, sharp and cold, and likely $15 to $20 a bowl. US and Bahamian dollars trade one for one, and vendors take both. If raw seafood worries you, cracked conch is the same meat battered and fried, much like calamari. Potter's Cay Dock, under the Paradise Island bridge, is the cheaper, rougher version. Go before dark, when mail boats load for the Family Islands and the stall owners crack conch shells open by hand.

Sunday changes the city. Christ Church Cathedral on George Street and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Kirk near Government House fill for services by 9am, most Bay Street shops stay shut, and Bahamians spend the afternoon at Montagu Beach and Goodman's Bay, so make Sunday your beach day at Cable Beach. Before booking a boat trip to Rose Island or the Exumas, check the US National Hurricane Center forecast for the Bahamas. Expect harbour air that smells of salt and diesel, and an afternoon downpour that tends to clear within an hour. Jitney route 10 runs from downtown to Cable Beach for roughly $1.25 to $1.50 in cash; service thins out after 6 or 7pm, so take a taxi back and agree the fare before you get in. TTDI's solo-traveler safety score for Nassau is 4.2/10 (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index). After dark, stay on Bay Street, West Bay Street and the Cable Beach strip, and don't walk through Over-the-Hill south of Shirley Street at night.
