What's the must-see thing in Orlando?

Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, open since October 1971, draws over 17 million visitors a year. The park's 6 themed lands spread across 107 acres in Bay Lake, anchored by Cinderella Castle. Space Mountain and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train are the signature rides. Both queues regularly pass 90 minutes by midday on peak days.

First-timers at Magic Kingdom tend to arrive around 10am and spend an hour on Main Street U.S.A. before they reach a ride. The smarter move is rope drop. Gates open 30 minutes before the posted time, and Fantasyland rides sit at 15-minute waits before 9:30am. The air at that hour still carries the smell of fresh waffle cones from the Main Street Confectionery, and the Florida humidity hasn't fully set in. The park's hub-and-spoke layout lets you cut between Adventureland and Tomorrowland in under 5 minutes without backtracking down Main Street. Afternoon thunderstorms roll through between 2pm and 4pm from June through September. They last about 30 minutes, and they clear half the park. Bring a packable rain jacket. Umbrellas are a liability in Disney's narrow ride queues. The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean are both indoor, air-conditioned rides worth saving for the worst of the 3pm heat.

Universal Epic Universe opened in May 2025, the first new major theme park in Orlando since Islands of Adventure in 1999. Super Nintendo World is the current draw. You walk through a warp pipe into a full-scale Mushroom Kingdom, and the walkways have a slight give underfoot, like packed playground surface. The smell of warm caramel from Toadstool Cafe hits before you see the building. Single-day tickets currently start around $159 on off-peak weekdays and can reach $209 on peak weekends. The park tends to hit capacity on Saturdays by 10:30am. That said, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure, which opened in 2010, might still be the better themed environment for anyone who grew up on the books. Hogsmeade village runs real snow effects on the rooftops even in 33°C Florida heat.

Orlando beyond the parks is a different city entirely. Mills 50, the Vietnamese district along East Colonial Drive near Mills Avenue, has over a dozen pho and banh mi spots in a 4-block stretch. The smell of charred pork and star anise drifts across the sidewalk at lunchtime. Domu, a ramen shop on the same road, typically draws a 40-minute wait on Friday evenings. Winter Park, about 15 minutes north of downtown, has a walkable stretch of Park Avenue lined with independent restaurants and galleries. The Ravenous Pig on Orange Avenue has been one of the area's standout gastropubs since 2007. International Drive runs its own corridor south of the parks. The observation wheel at ICON Park reaches 122 meters, and Orlando International Premium Outlets nearby has 180 stores, with Nike and Vineyard Vines typically 30% to 60% below retail. Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex sits about 50 minutes east on the 528 and runs $75 per adult. You might catch a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch from the observation gantry if the schedule lines up.

EPCOT runs differently from the other Disney parks. You could skip rides entirely and still spend half a day eating and drinking around the World Showcase. The 11 country pavilions circle a 40-acre lagoon, each with standalone food and drink stands. The kakigori shaved ice at the Japan pavilion and the school bread at Norway's Kringla Bakeri og Kafe are each under $8. You'll smell the wood-fired flatbread from the Morocco pavilion three stands away. Les Halles Boulangerie-Patisserie in the France pavilion tends to draw the longest food queue in the Showcase, with croissants and croque monsieur running $6 to $12. By mid-afternoon, most visitors are carrying drinks between pavilions, and the Showcase takes on a festival energy. Mind you, the walk on the east side of the lagoon has almost no shade, and you'll cover 8 to 10 miles in a full day. Orlando's pavement radiates heat well past sunset.

The parks sit 20 to 35 minutes southwest of Orlando International Airport, known locally as MCO. No useful public transit connects MCO to the Disney or Universal complexes. Budget $25 to $40 each way for a rideshare, or rent a car if you're staying more than 3 days. Disney's on-property hotels start around $250 per night and include perks like the Skyliner gondola and early park entry. The International Drive corridor runs $120 to $180 for mid-range chains with shuttle service. Kissimmee vacation rentals south on US-192 can drop below $100 per night for whole houses that sleep 8 or more. All three major parks require advance ticket purchases. Walk-up windows cost $15 to $30 more than online prices, and Disney's Park Pass reservation system still requires a specific park selection for each day. Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead for summer visits.

The top three

  • Magic Kingdom

Opened October 1, 1971, and still the most-visited theme park in the Western Hemisphere at over 17 million annual visitors. Cinderella Castle, Space Mountain, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train define Orlando. Arrive at rope drop to beat 90-minute afternoon waits.

  • Universal Epic Universe

Orlando's newest major park, opened May 2025. The Super Nintendo World section recreates the Mushroom Kingdom at full scale, with walkways that flex underfoot. Weekday tickets start around $159. The park tends to reach capacity on Saturdays by 10:30am.

  • EPCOT

Disney's second Orlando park, open since October 1982. The World Showcase circles a 40-acre lagoon with 11 country pavilions selling regional food and drink. More drink stands per acre than any other Disney park. The kakigori at Japan and school bread at Norway are each under $8.

Reservations required for at least one of these.
