Orlando's restaurant map is wider than the theme-park shorthand suggests. The dense downtown grid around Lake Eola and Thornton Park carries most of the city's serious independent kitchens, with a small cluster east of Summerlin Avenue handling the Japanese and ramen end of the spectrum, and a handful of neighborhood rooms scattered south along Orange Avenue and west to Church Street. What follows is twelve restaurants pulled from that working downtown — a Mexican kitchen on South Orange, a late-night pizza counter at the Lake Eola edge, a sushi lounge on East Central, an all-hours diner on Colonial — chosen because each one earns its place at a specific hour and a specific table, not because a guidebook said so.
