What's the must-see thing in Maui?

The drive from Kahului up Route 378 takes about 90 minutes. The road climbs through switchbacks that push above the cloud line near 7,000 feet. Sea-level Kihei and its 27°C beaches feel like a different island by the time you reach the summit lot. The air up there sits around 4°C, thin and mineral, cold enough that your breath fogs before sunrise. Wind whips across the crater rim. When dawn breaks, cinder cones throw long shadows across the volcanic floor while amber and violet light spreads from the east. Most visitors stay 30 to 45 minutes at the top, then descend to the Visitor Center at 7,000 feet where silversword plants line the Pa Ka'oao Trail. The Park Service charges $30 per vehicle plus a $1.50 booking fee. Those sunrise slots sell out within minutes of opening, so set your alarm for the day the booking window drops.

The Road to Hana runs 64 miles along Maui's north shore, with 620 curves and 59 bridges, most of them single-lane. Upcountry Maui runs cooler and quieter. Makawao, at 1,500 feet on Haleakalā's northwest slope, has a main street of galleries and a paniolo ranching history from the 1800s.
