Is Maui LGBTQ-friendly?
Maui scores 9/10 for LGBTQ+ friendliness (sourced from TTDI's editorial rubric). Hawaii has had marriage equality for over a decade, and same-sex couples check into Wailea resorts or Paia guesthouses without a second glance. There is no gay district on the island, so build your days around beaches, small-town cafes and long dinners rather than nightlife.
Build the Sunday around the south shore. Park at the Oneloa (Big Beach) lots off Makena Alanui by 2pm, because they fill fast and rangers clear the park around sunset. From the north end of Oneloa, it's a five-minute scramble over sharp lava rock, hot underfoot by midday, to the smaller cove, where the sand is coarse and gold, the water is often glassy until the afternoon trade winds pick up, and you'll hear the drums before you see anyone. That said, it is a scene, not a secret. On a busy Sunday a few hundred people share a cove you could walk end to end in three minutes. If one of you wants a crowd and the other wants a nap, split it: one goes over the rocks, the other stays under the kiawe trees at Oneloa, two-thirds of a mile of open sand where nobody will bother you.
Dinner, grouped by mood. For the romantic one, Mama's Fish House in Kuau, a mile east of Paia, is touristy and expensive, with mains upward of $60, and it is still worth it: the menu names the fisherman who landed your fish that morning, and a window table at sunset looks straight over Kuau Cove. Book four to six weeks out and ask for the window. For a casual night, Paia Fish Market at the corner of Hana Highway and Baldwin Avenue has long shared tables, grill smoke drifting out the door and fish plates in the $20s. For the view, Merriman's at Kapalua Point in West Maui has a fire pit on the lava headland where the wind smells of salt and plumeria. Skip Lahaina for dinner plans. Much of Front Street is still a rebuild zone after the August 2023 fire, and the town is not a backdrop.
The day divides neatly by altitude. Haleakalā National Park's sunrise requires a $1 vehicle reservation on Recreation.gov, released 60 days ahead, and the summit sits at 10,023 feet where dawn hovers near freezing and the wind cuts straight through a hoodie. It can be raw even partway down the slope. At 7am on 19 October 2026, the island reading was 13.4°C in light drizzle at 100% humidity, so bring a blanket and a thermos. From there, history buffs can take the Hana Highway to Kahanu Garden, where Piʻilanihale Heiau, a stone temple platform, rises out of the breadfruit groves. Wai'anapanapa State Park, with its black sand and cold freshwater caves, now requires a timed reservation through the state parks site, so book both stops before you leave the hotel.
On rooms: Wailea and Kaanapali pools fill with wedding and bachelorette parties from May to October, so read the reviews for group noise before booking. Paia and Haiku guesthouses are quieter and more couple-heavy. In Wailea, pay up for a room with a real lanai, because the base rooms at the big resorts can feel boxy for a week. The warmest welcome, though, may come from local history: Hawaiian culture has long recognised māhū, people who embody both masculine and feminine spirit, and the documentary Kumu Hina brought that tradition to mainland audiences in 2014. Kanaka Maoli hosts will often bring it up before you do.

Legal status
Same-sex relations are legal
Same-sex relations are legal nationwide since Lawrence v. Texas in 2003 and marriage equality since Obergefell in 2015, reinforced by the Respect for Marriage Act. Anti-discrimination and gender-recognition rules vary significantly by state, so the experience differs between destinations.

The scene
Maui has no gayborhood, and at the moment no dedicated gay bar either. The queer centre of gravity is Little Beach in Makena State Park, a clothing-optional cove on the far side of the Puʻu Olaʻi cinder cone, where Sunday afternoons bring a drum circle and a mixed gay and straight crowd. Paia's surf-town cafes and the bars along South Kihei Road are the easy everyday spaces, and Maui Pride runs an annual festival and a small events calendar.
Safety notes
In Wailea, Kihei, and Paia, two men or two women holding hands draw no reaction. Upcountry Kula and the Hana coast are rural, church-going ranch and taro country, where you might get a long look but rarely any trouble. Nudity is illegal in Hawaii state parks, and state officers do write citations at Little Beach. The bigger physical risk is the Oneloa shorebreak, which causes serious neck and back injuries every year.
