When's the best time to visit Maui in 2026?

Mid-April through late May is the window most repeat visitors target. Daily highs along the Kihei coast sit around 28°C (82°F), trade winds keep the humidity tolerable, and resort rates at places like the Fairmont Kea Lani or Andaz Maui drop into the low $300s per night. September and October are nearly identical in temperature but even quieter. Snorkel visibility at Molokini Crater tends to be best in those months, often reaching 45 metres. You can park at the Kapalua Coastal Trail without circling the lot three times. That said, September falls within the Central Pacific hurricane season (June through November). Direct strikes on Maui are statistically rare, but a passing tropical disturbance can cancel boat excursions for 2-3 days.

On Maui, the difference between April and August is not the temperature but the crowds. In April, plumeria trees along the Kihei sidewalks drop thick, waxy petals that carry a scent somewhere between honey and coconut milk. Water temperature at Black Rock (Pu'u Keka'a) reaches 25°C (77°F), warm enough to snorkel without a rashguard. Haleakala National Park, established in 1961, is a 3,055-metre climb from the coast, and pre-dawn summit temperatures sit near 4°C (40°F). Bring layers. By October, North Shore surf at Ho'okipa Beach starts building, and wind picks up enough to make Kanaha Beach Park the gathering point for kitesurfers. Dry heat on the leeward side makes Makena State Park's Big Beach feel like high summer, with sand hot enough underfoot that you'll want reef shoes from the parking area.

December through March is whale season, and the experience is worth rearranging your schedule for if you have never seen a humpback breach. Thousands of North Pacific humpbacks migrate to the shallow Au'au Channel between Maui and Lanai each winter, and from the overlook at Papawai Point near Ma'alaea you can sometimes spot spouts without binoculars. Hotel rates in Wailea climb past $600/night by the third week of December. The Road to Hana, all 103 kilometres of it, turns into a slow convoy of rental SUVs. Wai'anapanapa State Park requires advance reservations, and slots for the black-sand beach fill up 2 weeks out. Breakfast at Kihei Caffe means a 45-minute line by 8am. Mind you, if whales are your priority, late January or February is the better window, when sighting rates peak and the holiday crowds have cleared.

Maui's rain is not what mainland visitors expect. The windward northeast side, around Hana and the Ke'anae Peninsula, receives over 5,000 mm of rainfall annually. That water feeds the cascades along the Pipiwai Trail, including Makahiku Falls. The leeward coast around Wailea gets roughly 250 mm per year. Even in the wettest months (November through February), showers on the west side tend to be brief 15-minute afternoon bursts. The real disruption is vog, volcanic haze from Kilauea on the Big Island that occasionally drifts over and turns sunsets a deep burnt orange while leaving a faint sulfur tang in the air.
