Is Maui good for digital nomads in 2026?
Maui scores 5.8/10 for digital nomads (sourced from TTDI's editorial rubric). Kīhei has fibre, a Safeway, and coin laundries strung along one flat stretch of South Kīhei Road, which covers the basics, but a month will likely run you $5,500, real coworking is close to nonexistent, and foreign nomads on ESTA get 90 days with no extension. Base yourself in Kīhei or Wailuku, never in Lahaina.
Kīhei is where we'd sign a month-long lease. South Kīhei Road runs flat for about 6 miles, putting Foodland, Safeway at Piʻilani Village, and a couple of coin laundries all within flip-flop distance. Hawaiian Telcom has been laying fibre through much of Kīhei, but ask the host for a speedtest screenshot that shows the provider name, because a listing that says "fast wifi" tells you nothing. Expect $3,000 to $4,500 for a one-bedroom condo on a 30-night-plus booking. The trade-off is wind: the trades tend to pick up after 1 pm, rattling lanai screens loudly enough to wreck a video call, so put your desk on the side away from the ocean. Wailuku, 20 minutes north, is cheaper and quieter. Wailuku Coffee Company on Market Street pours a decent cup, and the Kahului Costco sits beside Kahului Airport (OGG) for the monthly bulk run. Mind you, Wailuku goes dark by about 7 pm.
Skip Lahaina for a work stay. The wildfire of 8 August 2023 destroyed most of Front Street, including Waiola Church and the Lāhainā Jodo Mission, and the rentals that survived are still needed by displaced families, so a month booked there takes a home from a resident. Maui County's Bill 9 is also phasing vacation rentals out of apartment-zoned condos, starting in West Maui, so a Kāʻanapali or Nāpili listing might not be legal next year. Pāʻia smells of surf wax and plumeria and works well for a weekend, but parking is a fight and Hāna Highway traffic backs up through town every morning. Upcountry Makawao and Kula are cool and green: Open-Meteo's reading for Maui at 7 am on 19 October 2026 showed 13.4°C, light drizzle and 100% humidity, which is classic Upcountry weather. That feels lovely until a rainstorm knocks the DSL line out, which is why plenty of Upcountry homes keep Starlink as a backup.
Sort out a desk before you land, because coworking barely exists here. The Maui Research & Technology Center in Kīhei leases offices to tech firms, but it's structured for companies rather than drop-ins. The Hawaii State Public Library has branches in Kahului, Kīhei and Wailuku, all with free wifi and air-conditioned quiet, though hours are short and Sundays are usually closed. Visitors pay a fee for a library card, so check the current price at the desk. Cafes are worse. Kihei Caffe fills with a loud breakfast crowd by 8 am, the tables are outdoors and sticky with syrup, and there are almost no outlets. Across most of the island, open-air seating means roosters and leaf blowers will be on every call. Treat cafes as places for an hour of email, not for a full workday.
Plan on about $5,500 a month for one person: roughly $3,800 on rent, $900 on a monthly car rental, and $800 on groceries at Hawaii prices, where a gallon of milk can cost $8 at Foodland. Hawaiian Electric's residential rates are among the highest in the US, so ask whether the condo bills air conditioning separately before you sign. Maui Bus costs $2 a ride, but most routes run hourly, and outside the Kīhei-to-Kahului corridor a car isn't optional. For weekends, a sunrise visit to Haleakalā National Park requires a Recreation.gov reservation ($1) on top of the $30 vehicle entry fee. Waiʻānapanapa State Park on the Hāna side also needs an advance booking if you're not a Hawaii resident. Book both by Wednesday or you'll spend Saturday morning on Costco errands instead.

Visa options
The US has no digital nomad visa. Visa Waiver nationals get 90 days on an ESTA ($40 since September 2025) with no extension, and a side trip to Canada or Mexico does not reset the clock. B-2 visitors may be admitted for up to six months at the officer's discretion. Either status tolerates remote work for a foreign employer at most, and that remains a legal grey area. Answer border questions truthfully. US citizens need nothing.
