Is Maui family-friendly?

Maui scores 8.8/10 on family friendliness (see the TTDI Family-Friendliness Index), which puts it among the stronger choices for traveling with kids. Base yourselves in Kihei on the south shore, where the beach parks come with calm morning water, lawns, and outdoor showers. Plan on a rental car, a two-bedroom condo with a kitchen, and the aquarium in Māʻalaea for days when it rains.

Kihei on the south shore is the best base for kids under 8. The water is calmest early, and the trade winds tend to pick up after about 11 a.m., so get the swimming done first. Kamaole Beach Park I, II and III sit along South Kihei Road within roughly 2 miles of each other, each with a lifeguard tower, restrooms, and an outdoor shower for rinsing gritty toes. Kam III has the widest lawn, where a toddler can nap in the shade of a kiawe tree while the grass stays cool underfoot, and Kalama Park, a few minutes north on South Kihei Road, adds a playground. Here is a sample day. At 8 a.m., snorkel the rocky edge at Kam I. Around noon, get shave ice at Ululani's in Kihei, then nap. At 4 p.m., push the stroller along the Wailea Beach Path, a paved route of about 1.5 miles past the resorts and the smoothest stroller surface on the island. The coarse sand beside that path will stop a lightweight umbrella stroller within 10 metres.

Maui Ocean Center in Māʻalaea is where to go when it rains. The walk-through acrylic tunnel holds most 3-year-olds longer than you'd expect, adult tickets currently run around $60 online with children paying less, and the whole visit fits inside 2 hours before nap time. Inside it is cool and dim, it smells faintly of salt water, and the restrooms have changing tables. Haleakalā National Park is the real trade-off: sunrise at the 10,023-foot summit needs a $1 online reservation on top of the $30 vehicle fee, which means a 3 a.m. alarm, and the air near the crater often sits close to freezing. On the morning of 19 October 2026, TTDI's weather reading showed 13.4°C and light drizzle, and the summit runs far colder than that. For under-5s, we'd pick a midday drive up instead, which needs no reservation. Pack fleece for everyone. ʻĪao Valley State Monument in Wailuku also asks visitors to book ahead, and its short loop includes stairs, so carry the baby rather than push.

The Road to Hāna splits families. About 52 miles from Kahului, it winds through roughly 600 bends and dozens of one-lane bridges, and carsick kids under 10 tend to fall apart by mile 20. Waiʻānapanapa State Park requires a reservation, and the currents off its black sand beach are strong enough that we keep kids out of the water there. Kahanu Garden near Hāna is flat, grassy, and quieter. Beyond Hāna, the Pīpīwai Trail in the Kīpahulu District reaches the Makahiku Falls overlook after about half a mile, which is a sensible turnaround for ages 5 to 8; the full 4-mile round trip to Waimoku Falls, through a bamboo forest that knocks and creaks in the wind, suits kids 9 and older. The skip list starts at Big Beach in Makena State Park, whose shorebreak injures adults every year. Lahaina is the next skip: the town is still rebuilding after the August 2023 wildfire, Waiola Church burned in it, and much of Front Street remains closed to visitors. Many Molokini snorkel boats set a minimum age, so read the fine print before you pay.

Book a condo, not a hotel room. A standard resort room on Maui usually means two queen beds and a mini-fridge, while a two-bedroom Kihei condo typically comes with a full kitchen and an in-unit washer, which you'll want after a day of red-dirt shorts. Check the bed line before paying, because some listings called 'family' units count a sofa bed in the living room. In Wailea, the Grand Wailea's river pool and waterslides keep kids aged 6 to 12 busy all afternoon, at resort prices. Groceries on Maui are expensive, so a Costco run in Kahului, near the airport, on arrival day pays for itself. For picky eaters, Foodland's Spam musubi, plain rice plates and shave ice cover most days. Allergy families should ask about macadamia nuts, which turn up in pancakes, cookies and pie crusts. Rent car seats with the car or bring your own. Maui Bus routes run about once an hour on most lines, and drivers ask that strollers be folded.

9/10 family-friendliness rating

Streets are uneven; baby carriers travel better than strollers.

Child safety notes

Swim at lifeguarded beaches in the morning, before the trade winds build, and keep kids out of the shorebreak at Makena and the currents at Waiʻānapanapa. The Haleakalā summit is above 10,000 feet, so skip it with infants who have colds. Hawaii law requires car seats or boosters until about age 10. Use mineral sunscreen, because oxybenzone sunscreens are banned in Hawaii.
