Where should I stay in Anchorage?

Downtown between 3rd and 6th avenues. That's the answer for a first visit. Hotel Captain Cook on 5th Avenue runs $220-$320/night in peak summer and still feels like 1965 inside, all dark wood paneling and brass elevator doors. The Hilton at 500 W 3rd Avenue sits at $200-$280. Both put you within a 5-minute walk of the Anchorage Museum at 625 C Street and the start of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, an 18-kilometer paved path along Knik Arm where you might spot beluga whales off Point Woronzof. The restaurant strip along G Street between 4th and 6th has maybe 15 serious options. That sounds thin compared to a lower-48 city, but Anchorage has 290,000 people. This is where the dining concentrates. One trade-off catches first-timers in summer. The sun barely sets. On the solstice it dips below the horizon around 11:40pm and comes back by 4:20am. Cheaper hotels have thin curtains. Pack a sleep mask or request blackout shades when booking.

Spenard stretches along Spenard Road between Northern Lights Boulevard and the airport. It's where Anchorage locals go to eat. The Lakefront Anchorage sits on the shore of Lake Spenard at $160-$240 in July and August, and you fall asleep to the drone of floatplanes on Lake Hood next door. Moose's Tooth Pub and Pizzeria on Old Seward Highway pulls 45-minute waits on Friday evenings for its roasted-garlic and cream-cheese pies, with 40-plus taps of Alaska-brewed beer. Bear Tooth Theatrepub, its sibling across the parking lot, screens second-run films for $4 while you eat burritos. The catch is real, though. Nothing in Spenard is walkable from downtown, and the People Mover bus runs limited routes with last service around 10pm on weekdays. Without a rental car, you're stuck after dark.

South Anchorage past the Dimond Center mall, around O'Malley Road, makes sense if your trip centers on Chugach State Park. Established in 1970, the park covers nearly 200,000 hectares of alpine terrain that starts at the city's eastern edge. Vacation rentals along Hillside Drive run $120-$200/night and put trailheads like Flattop Mountain within a 10-minute drive. You'll smell wet spruce the moment you step out of the car, and the temperature tends to drop 3-4 degrees as you gain elevation on the Glen Alps access road. Mind you, the trade-off is isolation. You're 25 minutes from downtown restaurants and 30 from the airport with nothing walkable except trails. Mid-August temperatures currently hover around 17°C during the day and fall to 8-9°C after midnight. By September, termination dust appears on the peaks and hotel rates drop 30-40% from summer highs.

Midtown along Northern Lights and Benson boulevards has chain hotels at $90-$150/night, but the area is parking lots and aging strip malls with no sense of place. You'll save $50 a night and spend it on rideshares. Mountain View and Fairview, directly east of downtown, carry the city's highest property-crime rates. Book west of Gambell Street and south of Ship Creek. Downtown feels comfortable on foot through the long summer daylight.
