How do I get from the airport to Singapore?

Changi (SIN) sits about 20 km east of the Central Business District, and the MRT is the right call. Follow signs to the train station — it connects to Terminals 2 and 3 through Jewel Changi, that enormous glass dome with the indoor waterfall you'll walk past whether you planned to or not. If you landed at Terminal 1 or 4, a free Skytrain or shuttle bus gets you to the MRT platform in under five minutes. Board the East-West Line toward Tanah Merah, step across the platform to a westbound train, and ride to City Hall — that puts you in the Colonial District, a short walk from Marina Bay and the Padang. Total time gate-to-platform: about 30 minutes. Fare runs around S$2 with a stored-value card, S$2.40 with a standard single-trip ticket. Pick up an EZ-Link card at any TransitLink kiosk before the turnstiles, or tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard directly — the per-ride fare runs slightly higher without the stored-value card, but it works. Trains run from about 5:31am to 11:18pm, every 3-4 minutes at peak.

After the last train, Grab is your move. Look for the ride-hailing pickup signs at ground transport — every terminal has them, marked in purple. A ride to Orchard Road or Marina Bay runs S$20-30 (US$16-23), fare shown upfront before you confirm. Metered taxis queue at the basement stands and work fine, but Singapore's taxi surcharges stack in ways that surprise people. Airport pickup adds S$3-5 depending on the day. The midnight surcharge between 12am and 6am tacks on 50% of the metered fare. A trip that reads S$22 on the meter lands at roughly S$38 once the add-ons settle. That said, even S$38 is reasonable compared to the limousine counters inside arrivals, which quote S$55-80 for the same trip in a marginally nicer sedan. Twenty minutes of leather seats is not worth the premium.

One thing that catches first-timers: Changi is air-conditioned to about 22°C, and the moment you step outside, Singapore's heat and thick humidity land on your skin like a warm, damp cloth — at the moment it's running 32°C and feeling closer to 38. Take your time through Jewel on the way to the MRT. The walk runs 10-15 minutes past coffee kiosks where the smell of roasted kopi beans hangs in the cold air, and the sound of the Rain Vortex waterfall fills the atrium before you see it. If you arrive between 6 and 9 in the morning, the MRT cars will be full of quiet commuters, but the ride is short and the train's air conditioning feels like a relief after the covered walkways. Everything is signed in English. Announcements are in English. Every station name is romanized. Singapore is the one Southeast Asian airport arrival where you don't need to brace yourself.

Skip the public bus — route 36 technically reaches the city center for S$2, but it crawls through suburban housing estates for over an hour, and the savings over the MRT barely exist. Skip the private sedan services that email you S$60-90 quotes before your trip. They're selling peace of mind that the infrastructure already provides. And skip the currency exchange booths in the arrivals hall; the rates are poor. Change money at Mustafa Centre in Little India or The Arcade near Raffles Place once you're settled — both give rates within a fraction of the interbank mid-market.
