When's the best time to visit San Juan in 2026?

Humidity sits in the low 70s, manageable compared to what August brings. Monthly rainfall drops below 100mm. Evenings in Old San Juan are cool enough that walking the adoquín, the blue-grey cobblestones between Calle del Cristo and Plaza de Armas (the central square since 1521), is comfortable rather than a chore. Hotel rates in Condado and Isla Verde run $180-280 per night for a mid-range room in February, roughly 40% above the September floor but 20% below the Christmas week spike.

January is the single best month. The Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, usually the third weekend, turns four blocks of Old San Juan into an open-air party. Bomba drummers play on every corner, and the smell of alcapurrias frying at sidewalk stands drifts down toward the waterfront. The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, founded in 1529, is less crowded at 8am than at midday. The walk along the Paseo del Morro to the San Juan National Historic Site takes about 45 minutes without the noon sun pressing on your shoulders. February and March keep similar conditions. By late April, afternoon showers start building over El Yunque and drift west toward the metro area by 3pm.

August through October is the low point. Hurricane season runs June through November, but the serious risk concentrates in those three months. Rainfall in October reaches 160mm, and humidity holds above 85%. Your shirt sticks to your back within 10 minutes of stepping outside. That said, flights from the U.S. mainland drop to $150-200 round-trip in September, and hotel rates in Condado fall below $130 per night. A September week can run $700 less than the same Condado room in February. On a quiet September afternoon, the fortress walls at El Morro glisten with rain, and half the bars in La Placita de Santurce cut their weekday hours.

May and November sit between the extremes. May brings the first real rain, but severe storms before July are uncommon. November's showers taper off, and by Thanksgiving week, hotel availability tightens and restaurant hours extend. For a first visit, book January or February. You get dry skies, walkable evenings, and enough daylight to cover the full circuit of Old San Juan's fortification walls.
