How do I get from the airport to San Juan?

SJU feels like any mid-sized US domestic terminal. If you arrive from the mainland, there is no immigration or customs line. Puerto Rico is a US territory, so your flight counts as domestic. You land, grab your bag, walk out. The humidity hits the moment those sliding doors open. Uber and Lyft pickups sit across the pedestrian bridge in the parking structure, Level 2. Taxis line up curbside outside baggage claim. The airport sits in the municipality of Carolina, east of the tourist corridor that runs from Isla Verde beach through Condado to Viejo San Juan.

Uber and Lyft both run here, and either one is the right move for most arrivals. Your mainland US phone plan covers Puerto Rico without roaming fees, so the apps work the same as in Miami or New York. Request your ride inside the terminal before you cross to the pickup zone. To the Isla Verde hotel strip, figure 8-12 minutes at $8-12. Condado or Ocean Park, where most first-time visitors book, runs $12-18 and 15-25 minutes. Viejo San Juan costs $18-25 and takes 25-40 minutes, more if you hit the PR-26 expressway merge during the 4-6 PM rush. You'll likely hear reggaeton thumping from car speakers on every lane of that highway. Fares stay flat most of the year. The exceptions are New Year's Eve and heavy cruise mornings, when 3-4 ships unload at Old San Juan's cruise port and ride queues grow long. Cell service inside the parking garage tends to drop, so pull up the app before you leave the terminal building.

Government-regulated taxis follow a fixed-zone fare posted at the taxi stand. Zone L1 covers Isla Verde at $15. Zone L2 handles Condado and Miramar at $19. Zone L3 reaches Viejo San Juan and the Convention District at $25. Rates are per trip, not per passenger, with a $1 bag fee after the first. The taxi line moves fast and needs no phone app, which makes it a decent fallback if your battery dies after a long flight. After midnight, cabs thin out quickly. Ride-hail availability holds better through the small hours, though wait times might stretch to 10-15 minutes around 2 AM.

Skip the rental car counter on arrival day. Viejo San Juan's tight one-way grid might have you circling Calle del Cristo for 20 minutes while scooters and the old city's street cats cross in front of you at their own pace. Most Condado hotels charge $25-35 per night for parking. Rent on day two or three when you head to El Yunque rainforest or the bioluminescent kayak launches near Fajardo, both about an hour east of San Juan. Public buses technically connect the airport area to the Tren Urbano at Sagrado Corazón station in Santurce, but service comes every 30-45 minutes with no luggage racks and no air conditioning in the afternoon heat. The Tren Urbano covers 17.2 km between Bayamón and Santurce. Useful once you settle in, but it does not reach the airport.
