What's happening in Goa this week?

Goa this week looks nothing like the peak-season postcard. The temperature sits around 26°C but 91% humidity makes it feel closer to 31°C, and the air smells of wet laterite and frangipani. Rain arrives in heavy bursts, typically mid-afternoon, sometimes for 20 minutes, sometimes for 3 hours. Tuesday through Thursday tend to see slightly lighter rainfall than weekends. The Arabian Sea is rough and grey along North Goa's coast from Candolim to Arambol, with red-flag swimming bans at most beaches. That said, the landscape south of Panjim turns an almost unreal green. Rice paddies flood between Ponda and Quepem, and the rivers run fast and brown. Hotel rates drop 40-60% compared to the dry-season peak, with a decent room in Panjim running ₹2,000-3,500, roughly $20-36 at the current rate of ₹96.57 to $1.

The Mapusa Friday Market is Goa's most reliable weekly anchor. It runs every Friday morning from around 7am to 1pm regardless of season, and it's a working market, not a tourist bazaar. Vendors sell Goan chorizo, local cashews at ₹800-1,200 per kilo, palm vinegar, and dried Bombay duck that gives off a pungent, salty funk you can smell from two stalls away. The Saturday Night Market at Arpora, which draws crowds only during the dry tourist season, is currently closed. Same for the Wednesday Anjuna Flea Market. Sunday mornings belong to Old Goa's churches. Mass at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, completed in 1605, starts at 8am and 10am. The Se Cathedral, dating to 1562, holds services at roughly the same hours. Both sit 10 km east of Panjim, about ₹300 by taxi each way. The Archaeological Museum next to the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, open since 1964, is free and takes about 40 minutes to walk through.

Monsoon Goa is a different trip than beach Goa, and it's worth leaning into that. Dudhsagar Falls near the Mollem railway halt on the Karnataka border hits peak flow right now. Water drops 310 metres over four tiers into a pool the color of warm milk. The jeep safari route closes during the wet season, so access means a guided trek or a train from Kulem. It's a full-day trip from Panjim. Closer to the coast, spice plantations around Ponda run tours year-round at ₹400-600 per person, and the monsoon greenery makes them more photogenic now than in the dry season. Fontainhas, the Latin Quarter, is walkable rain or shine. The narrow streets have tiled Portuguese-era houses in ochre and blue, and bars in Fontainhas pour feni and cold Kingfisher to a crowd that skews local on weekday evenings. Casino boats on the Mandovi River operate through monsoon, with entry packages starting around ₹2,000-3,000 including dinner.

Goa's food scene has its own monsoon rhythm. The annual fishing ban on mechanized boats is likely still active this week, so you'll see more mackerel and dried fish than the fresh kingfish and pomfret of winter menus. A thali plate of fish curry rice near Panjim's municipal market runs ₹150-250. Prawn balchão, the tangy-hot Goan pickle curry, is available year-round and worth ordering at any sit-down meal. Thursday and Friday evenings tend to be the liveliest near the Church of the Immaculate Conception, where tables fill by 8:30pm. Sunday nights are quieter, with most places winding down by 10pm. Feni, the local cashew or coconut spirit, goes for ₹50-80 a pour at most bars. Mind you, cashew feni at around 40% ABV tastes like turpentine to some. Worth trying once at a Fontainhas bar before you decide.
