Best museums

Goa's museum map runs along two axes. One stretches inland from Panaji to Old Goa, where the colonial state archived itself: a palace turned civic collection, a convent housing Christian art, an ASI museum of archaeology and portraits. The other runs south, where the museums get stranger and more personal — vintage cars, naval aircraft, a hybrid that is half museum and half theme park. None of these places competes for scale with the great national collections, and pretending otherwise insults the visitor. Skip that comparison. What Goa offers instead is an unusually concentrated cross-section — civic, ecclesiastical, archaeological, contemporary, scientific, military, automotive, ethnographic — within a couple of hours' driving. This list runs from the institutional anchors in and around Panaji and Old Goa down to the more idiosyncratic collections in the south. None requires a full day. Most reward a careful hour, a quiet room, and a short conversation with whoever is staffing the door.
