Where to stay in Bali

Bali's accommodation map runs in three distinct registers, and where you sleep determines what your trip actually feels like. The west-coast strip — Tuban into Kuta, north through Legian, Seminyak, and Canggu — is one continuous beach with the volume turned up and down as you go: party-bar Kuta at the south, surf-cafe Canggu at the north, the long evolution in between. The Bukit peninsula in the south is a separate logic — Jimbaran's beach grills, Nusa Dua's gated resort complex, the Uluwatu cliffs above the Indian Ocean. Inland, Ubud sits in the rice-terrace foothills, two hours from any beach but a different country in tone. Sanur runs alone on the east coast — the boardwalk, the ferry pier for Nusa Penida, the older expat rhythm. For luxury inventory specifically, every neighborhood here carries a high-end anchor: The Mulia in Nusa Dua, Six Senses on the Uluwatu cliffs, W Bali in Seminyak, Tanah Gajah in Ubud, Andaz at Sanur. Picking the right neighborhood first — beach club vs. clifftop, cultural quiet vs. surf cafe, family resort vs. cocktail strip — narrows the hotel decision dramatically.

The trade is honest: you came for the beach, the pool, the spa, and Geger and Mengiat beaches deliver clear water and reef snorkeling within a 10-minute walk of any property inside the enclave. Bali Collection mall handles shopping and the evening Balinese-dance shows. The Mulia Bali anchors the high end on its own stretch of beach with butler service; Ayodya Resort Bali runs the family-resort tier with the kids club and the lagoon pool; Allia Residence sits just outside the gate on the main road for budget travelers willing to swap walkable beach access for the price drop. The center clusters around Jalan Raya Ubud at the Puri Saren royal palace and the Ubud traditional market — from there Monkey Forest Road runs south to the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary (15-minute walk), and Jalan Hanoman parallels east. The Campuhan Ridge Walk starts a 10-minute walk west of the palace and runs an hour through open rice country. Tegalalang's terraces are 20 minutes north by scooter. Within central Ubud, Puri Diamond Villas anchors the budget tier walkable to the palace; Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana sits on the east edge with its own rice-paddy frontage as the luxury showpiece. Padma Resort Ubud is further out in Payangan — a 30-minute drive into the gorge but with the cliff-edge infinity pool that explains the price. The trade against the main beach corridor is character — Tuban is mostly mid-rise hotels and rental-car lots, not warungs and surf shops — but the trade for the shuttle and the price is honest. Use this cluster for the night you fly in or out, and pivot to Legian or Seminyak for the meat of the trip.

   Sanur is Bali's east coast — the sunrise side, calm water inside the reef, a 5-kilometer paved boardwalk running from Mertasari Beach in the south past Sindhu and the morning fish market up to Matahari Terbit in the north where the Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan fast boats depart. It's the older Bali — the expat colony, the Le Mayeur museum, the German bakeries that have been there since the 1980s. The pace is slow on purpose: no surf, no nightclubs, families and retirees on the boardwalk at 7 AM. Andaz Bali, by Hyatt is the new anchor on Sindhu Beach — village-style layout, lagoon-access rooms — and Sanur Resort Watujimbar runs the budget end inland a short walk from the boardwalk.     Canggu is the youngest section of the west-coast continuum — Berawa in the south, Batu Bolong in the middle, Echo Beach in the north — connected by the perpetually congested Jalan Pantai Berawa and Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong. The character is surf-and-cafe: longboards on Batu Bolong's gentle beach break, smoothie bowls at Crate and Cafe Organic, sunset Bintangs at The Lawn or La Brisa. Rice fields still run behind the beach road in patches — the Berawa rice-paddy network is genuinely walkable on the back lanes. Cove Abasan sits inland on the rice-field side at the budget floor with the bumpy back-road access the review mentions honestly. From Berawa it's a 15-minute taxi south to Seminyak's Petitenget; north, the coast road runs to Pererenan and Tanah Lot. Stay in Canggu if you want surf and cafes over beach clubs and nightlife, and book a scooter — walking the main road is unpleasant.
