Is St. Thomas good for digital nomads in 2026?

St. Thomas scores 5.8/10 for digital-nomad suitability (sourced from TTDI's editorial rubric). Fiber from Viya and Liberty works when the WAPA grid stays up, and it often doesn't, so get a battery backup or a Starlink line before you commit to a month here. Budget roughly $4,500 a month all in. US citizens need no visa. Everyone else follows mainland US rules, and no nomad visa exists.

Bandwidth on St. Thomas depends on WAPA, the Water and Power Authority, more than on any router. In a bad stretch, outages hit Frenchtown, Bolongo Bay and the East End several times a month, and a listing that promises 300 Mbps means nothing when the modem dies at 2 pm on a deadline day. Before you book, put three questions to the host in writing: is the line Viya or Liberty fiber, does a battery keep the modem running, and does the building generator cover it? Within seconds of a blackout you'll hear diesel generators growl across the hillside, and the exhaust smell drifts in through louvered windows. Starlink sells residential service in the USVI, and long-stayers seem to treat it as a second line, not a luxury. The Liberty and Viya cell networks tend to hold up longer than home power, so a US eSIM with a big hotspot allowance is the cheapest insurance you can buy on day one. Hurricane season runs June through November, and in September one storm can take the grid down for a week.

For a month, Red Hook on the East End is the pick. Moe's Fresh Market, a laundromat, the Cruz Bay ferry dock and a dozen bars sit within a 10-minute walk, and a one-bedroom rents for roughly $2,200 to $3,000 a month. The trade-off is noise: on Friday and Saturday nights, live music from the waterfront bars carries up the hill until 1 am. Frenchtown, west of Charlotte Amalie, is quieter; the morning fish landing there smells of salt and scales, and rents run closer to $1,800 to $2,500, though you'll want a car to reach Cost-U-Less or Plaza Extra for groceries. Skip downtown Charlotte Amalie for a long stay. Main Street fills with cruise passengers from about 9 am and empties by 5 pm, then the jewelry-store shutters roll down with a metal clatter and the blocks around Fort Christian go dead. Hillside villas on Skyline Drive have the best views and the worst commutes, since every grocery run from up there means a switchback climb in second gear.

St. Thomas has no coworking space with published monthly desk rates of the kind you'd find in Lisbon or Bangkok, at least none we could confirm in 2026, so plan to work from home and treat everything else as backup. The Enid M. Baa Public Library on Main Street in Charlotte Amalie has free wifi, cold air conditioning, and a quiet reading room, but its hours are short and weekend opening is hit or miss. In Red Hook, Grateful Deli & Coffee pulls an early laptop crowd for iced lattes and bagels: calm at 7 am, loud by 11 am, when charter crews and the St. John ferry line pile in. The marina cafés at Yacht Haven Grande will generally let you hold a table as long as you keep ordering. One thing to watch around Havensight: café wifi slows to a crawl when three or four ships are docked, because thousands of passengers jumping onto the same free networks drag the whole system down.

Groceries on St. Thomas run 30 to 50 percent above mainland prices because almost everything arrives by container, and a gallon of milk at Moe's can top $8. WAPA's electricity rates are among the highest in the US, so a month of air conditioning can add $250 to $400 if utilities aren't included in your lease. Budget about $900 a month for a rental car. You will need one: traffic drives on the left, in US-spec cars, on roads full of blind hairpins. Open-air safari taxis cover the run from Red Hook to Charlotte Amalie for a few dollars, but they stop running reliably after dark. St. John is the weekend payoff. The Red Hook ferry reaches Cruz Bay in about 20 minutes, and the Catherineberg Sugar Mill Ruins are a short drive from the dock. Between January and April, snorkel trips over the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument, off St. John's south shore, are often fully booked by Thursday.

  • Enid M. Baa Public Library, Charlotte Amalie (free wifi; a library, not a coworking space)

Visa options

US citizens need no passport, because St. Thomas is US territory, and everyone else follows mainland rules. Visa Waiver nationals get 90 days with an ESTA, and that stay cannot be extended. Other nationals need a B-2 visa. Days in the USVI count against the same 90-day limit as the mainland, there is no digital nomad visa, and a B-2 bars local employment. Flights to the mainland clear US Customs at Cyril E. King Airport before departure.
