When's the best time to visit St. Thomas in 2026?

The dry season on St. Thomas runs from mid-December through April. Average highs hold around 28°C year-round, so the island sounds identical in every season on paper. On September 11, 2026, the 27.9°C air felt like 31.3°C at 85% humidity. A January afternoon at the same 28°C feels 3°C cooler on your skin because the moisture backs off. That gap decides whether a walk up the 99 Steps to Blackbeard's Castle is pleasant or a sticky slog where you stop twice to catch your breath. Easterly trades run 15-25 km/h through March. The salt smell off the Atlantic reaches Charlotte Amalie's waterfront all day. Water temperatures hover near 26°C, warm enough for long swims at Coki Beach without a rash guard. Morning light hits Magens Bay sand around 6:40am in February. By 7:15 you might have 200 metres of shoreline to yourself, before the first cruise tender docks at the West Indian Company pier around 8am.

The catch with the December-April window is cruise traffic. Charlotte Amalie's harbor handles 5-7 large ships on a single day in January. On those mornings, Main Street fills with 10,000+ day-trippers by 9am, taxi vans charge $10-12 per person to Red Hook, and the noise of rolling luggage on the cobblestones carries up the hillside. The fix for overnight visitors is to wait until 4pm, when the last tenders pull back and the waterfront empties. By 5pm you'll hear tree frogs in the hills above Frenchtown, and St. Anne Chapel, built in 1921, sits quiet on its low ridge. Resort rates near Red Hook or the East End run $350-500 per night in February. They drop to $150-250 in May. Charlotte Amalie guesthouses stay closer to $180-280 year-round.

Avoid August through October. This is the peak of Atlantic hurricane season, and St. Thomas sits in the direct path. Hurricane Irma hit the island on September 6, 2017, with 185-mph winds that stripped roofs across the East End. Hurricane Maria followed on September 20. The island has rebuilt, but September remains the highest-probability month for named storms crossing the northern Caribbean. Rainfall averages 150mm per month in that window, the air hangs heavy and still without the trades, and several restaurants along Veterans Drive close until November. The water stays warm at 28-29°C, but the risk of multi-day power loss or flight cancellations makes August through October a poor window for a first trip.
