How do I get around Saratoga Springs?

Your feet handle 80% of a Saratoga Springs visit. Broadway runs about a mile from Congress Park at the south end to the railroad tracks north of Lake Avenue, and nearly everything a first-timer wants sits along that stretch or within 2 blocks of it. Sidewalks are wide, crosswalks are painted, and the speed limit downtown holds at 30 mph. You'll notice the pavement is uneven in spots near the older mineral spring pavilions on Spring Street, so skip the heels if you're walking to dinner. The whole downtown grid, from Phila Street west to Circular Street east, takes maybe 20 minutes to cross at a slow pace. That said, summer evenings on Broadway can feel warm and humid. Mid-July temperatures sit around 28°C, and the shade disappears once the sun clears the 3-story buildings lining the street.

A car becomes necessary the moment you leave the downtown rectangle. Saratoga Spa State Park is 2 miles south on Route 9, and while the entrance road is flat enough for a bike ride, carrying towels and coolers on foot is miserable. Moreau Lake State Park sits 15 miles north on I-87. The National Museum of Dance, inside the Spa State Park grounds at 99 South Broadway, has no practical transit connection. Free parking is scattered around downtown in small lots behind the buildings on the east side of Broadway. During racing season, late July through Labor Day at the Saratoga Race Course on Union Avenue, those lots fill by 10 a.m. and metered spots on Broadway max out at 2 hours. The track itself charges $5 for general parking on race days.

Uber and Lyft both work here, but the driver pool is thin. A ride from Albany International Airport to downtown Saratoga Springs runs $45 to $65 and takes about 35 minutes on I-87 North. Wait times in town average 8 to 12 minutes on a weekday, longer on Saturday nights in summer. During the Travers Stakes weekend in late August, expect 20-minute waits and surge pricing that can double the fare. Worth noting, there is no taxi stand downtown. You can call Saratoga Taxi at the number posted inside the Amtrak station, but Uber tends to arrive faster. During racing season, a free trolley loops between downtown Broadway and the Saratoga Race Course entrance on Union Avenue, running every 15 minutes from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on race days. This is the right call. Union Avenue parking lots charge $5 to $10 on big race days, and the 1.5-mile walk from Broadway to the track gates passes through a residential neighborhood with no shade and no sidewalk for the last quarter mile. The trolley drops you at the clubhouse gate. Bikes are the other strong option for that corridor. Rent one from Blue Sky Bicycles on Spring Street for around $35 per day. The streets between downtown and the track are flat and residential, and bike racks sit outside the track's main entrance. For anything beyond town limits, a rental from Enterprise on South Broadway or the Albany airport branch gives you access to the Adirondack foothills 30 minutes north, where the air smells like balsam fir and the lake water still feels cold in June.
