What's happening in Saratoga Springs this week?

This week is deep into the Saratoga Race Course meet, the oldest thoroughbred season in the country, running since 1863. Post time is 1:05pm, Wednesday through Sunday. Gates open at 11am, and general admission costs around $7. Weekday cards, Wednesday and Thursday, are the smart first-timer move. The grandstand is less packed, the betting windows are shorter, and you can lean on the rail. On weekends the crowd thickens and the sound changes. A low rumble of hooves on dirt, the PA caller's rising pitch in the stretch, the whole grandstand on its feet for the final furlong. Monday and Tuesday the track goes dark, and downtown Broadway goes quiet. Those are your days for the mineral springs, the museums along Union Avenue, and Saratoga Spa State Park without fighting for a parking spot.

The best free thing in Saratoga Springs happens before 9am. Morning workouts at the track begin around 7am, and the backstretch rail puts you close enough to hear horses blowing hard on their cooldown laps. The smell is damp grass, manure, and coffee drifting from the track kitchen. After the workouts, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame sits on Union Avenue, a 5-minute walk from the main gate. It opened in 1950 and covers the sport from its earliest American years. Congress Park downtown is about a 15-minute walk south. Saratoga Spa State Park, 2 miles further south on Route 9, has the Peerless Pool complex and mineral springs you can taste for free at several spouting points. The water at Hathorn Spring No. 1 on Spring Street downtown is heavy with iron and salt. Not pleasant. Try it anyway. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center, inside the park and open since 1966, runs evening concerts under a pine canopy where the air turns cool after sunset. The National Museum of Dance, also in the park since 1986, is the only museum in the country dedicated to professional dance.

Broadway runs the dining cycle on race days. The track empties by 5:30pm. By 6pm, restaurants fill south to north along the 6-block stretch. Hattie's on Phila Street has served Southern-fried chicken since 1938, the crust crunchy and heavily peppered from cast-iron skillets. Expect a 45-minute wait on Friday and Saturday evenings during the meet. Weekday evenings, you might wait 15 to 20 minutes. Caroline Street, three blocks east of Broadway, is the bar strip. It gets loud after 10pm on race weekends. The cocktail spots on Broadway tend to be quieter and run $14 to $18 per drink. Most wine bars pour Finger Lakes whites and reds by the glass for $12 to $16. For coffee before the track, hit one of the Broadway cafes by 8am. By 9:30 on race days, the lines build.
