What should I avoid in Huntsville?

Huntsville covers about 220 square miles across Madison County, and the transit won't save you. The public bus system runs about 8 routes on weekday schedules that stop by early evening. Rent a car at Huntsville International Airport. Rideshare wait times outside downtown can stretch to 15-20 minutes after 9pm. That said, the courthouse square area downtown is genuinely walkable. Big Spring Park, the Von Braun Center, and a dozen independent restaurants on Jefferson Street all sit within a 10-minute walk of each other. Monte Sano State Park is 15 minutes east by car, the Space Center is west along I-565, and the Botanical Garden is south off Bob Wallace Avenue. An Uber triangle between the three runs about $40-50.

Bridge Street Town Centre looks like a local gathering place in the photos. It's an outdoor shopping center with a carousel and an artificial lake, anchored by the same Belk and Barnes & Noble you'd find in any Southern suburb. The food there skews chain. You'll eat better and spend less 10 minutes south in Five Points, where Phat Sammy's does a smoked-pork bao for about $6 that tastes like someone cared about it. Campus No. 805, a renovated 1950s school building, has a beer garden, a distillery, and rotating food trucks on weekends. Mind you, the freeze-dried "astronaut ice cream" at the Space Center gift shop runs about a 300% markup over grocery-store price and tastes like flavored chalk. The actual exhibits are worth the $25 adult admission.

Summer heat in Huntsville is not the dry Western kind. At 94% humidity on a mid-June morning, 23°C already feels like 27°C before 7am. By 2pm in July and August, temperatures regularly hit 35°C and the asphalt on the Botanical Garden paths radiates heat back up at your ankles. Plan Monte Sano hikes before 9am from June through September, when the tree canopy still holds overnight cool. The second risk is tornadoes. Madison County sits in the northern Alabama tornado corridor, and the active season runs March through May. The April 27, 2011 outbreak killed 238 people across Alabama and damaged neighborhoods in southwest Huntsville. If a tornado watch becomes a warning, get to an interior room on the ground floor. Your hotel hallway, not your car.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center deserves 3-4 hours, not a full day. The outdoor rocket park, where a Saturn V lies on its side under a corrugated shelter, is the best part. Spend the afternoon at Big Spring Park downtown, where the limestone spring pumps roughly 5 million gallons a day and the water holds at 15°C year-round. Cold enough to surprise you if you dip your hand in. Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment at 2211 Seminole Drive is the largest privately owned arts facility in the US. Go on a Saturday, when the studios are open and the smell of kiln-fired clay drifts through the old factory hallways. For dinner, at least a third of the independent restaurants on Jefferson Street and Clinton Avenue close Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday through Saturday, the taco counters and barbecue spots along Jefferson tend to fill up by 7pm, and you might find yourself waiting 15 minutes for a table at the more popular places. Worth it.
