How do I get to Charleston?

Charleston International Airport (CHS) sits 19 km northwest of the downtown peninsula. It is a single-terminal operation that still feels manageable even during peak summer weeks. Delta runs 6-8 daily nonstops from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson at 1 hour 15 minutes. American connects through Charlotte-Douglas with 8-10 daily frequencies at roughly 1 hour 5 minutes gate to gate. United covers Chicago O'Hare and Newark-Liberty, and JetBlue flies direct from JFK and Boston Logan. Southwest operates from Baltimore-Washington, Nashville, and Houston Hobby. From the US East Coast, round-trip fares tend to land between $180 and $350. Summer months, June through August, and the spring festival window in March and April push prices toward the top of that range. Midweek seats in January or February can drop below $150 round-trip.

No transatlantic nonstops currently serve CHS. From London Heathrow, the practical routing connects through Atlanta on Delta (total travel time 11-13 hours) or through Charlotte on American (12-14 hours). Expect £600-900 round-trip via those hubs. From the US West Coast, direct options are thin. American flies nonstop from Los Angeles, but most itineraries route through Dallas-Fort Worth or Atlanta at 5-7 hours total and $250-500 round-trip. The air is thick and salt-tinged, 89% humidity in late August wrapping around you with the faint brackish smell of tidal creeks. Cicadas buzz from the live oaks in the parking median. Uber and Lyft pick up from a marked lot outside the terminal. The ride to the French Quarter or South of Broad runs $18-28 and takes 20-25 minutes via I-26, depending on the Meeting Street bottleneck downtown. Skip the CARTA bus from CHS. Route 11 does not reach the peninsula efficiently. A rental car is unnecessary if you are staying downtown, where the City Market and the Battery sit within a 25-minute walk of each other along hot, uneven sidewalks. If Folly Beach (16 km south) or Sullivan's Island (14 km northeast) is on your list, budget $30-40 per day for rideshares or grab a rental.
