Is Kathmandu good for solo travelers?

Stick to lit roads, skip Ratna Park and the Bishnumati riverbank after dark, and carry a charged phone. Male solo travelers will notice the hash sellers along Freak Street (Jochne) and the taxi touts outside Tribhuvan International Airport, both persistent but not threatening. The metered rate from TIA to Thamel should run 700-800 NPR, but drivers will open at 2,000, so settle the number before getting in. The hot water claim deserves scrutiny during monsoon, since solar heaters fail on overcast days and backup electric units sometimes lag. Mid-range hotels in Lazimpat and Jhamsikhel charge $25-40 for a proper single, no supplement.
