How do I get from the airport to Kathmandu?

Tribhuvan International Airport sits about 6 km east of Thamel, Kathmandu's main tourist district. Walk out of the arrivals hall and look for the prepaid taxi counter on your left before the exit doors. State your destination, pay the fixed fare (NPR 700-800 to Thamel, roughly $5 at the June 2026 rate of 150.93 NPR per dollar), and collect the receipt for your assigned driver outside. The whole exchange takes about 5 minutes. Your ride to Thamel will run 20-40 minutes depending on traffic, and the receipt means the fare is already settled. No negotiation, no meter games, no "my friend has a better hotel" pitch. The prepaid counter exists precisely because the alternative, haggling with freelance drivers in the parking lot, goes badly for new arrivals who don't yet know what NPR 800 should feel like.

If you have a working Nepali SIM, Pathao and InDrive both operate in Kathmandu. InDrive lets you bid on fares, and you'll likely pay NPR 400-600 to Thamel, about 30-40% less than the prepaid counter. Pathao works more like a conventional ride-hail with quoted prices. Worth noting, though. Both apps require a local phone number to register, and the Ncell tourist SIM counter in the arrivals hall (NPR 500 for 10 GB of data) sometimes closes after 10 pm. If your flight lands late, the prepaid taxi counter still runs for every arriving flight, making it the more reliable fallback. The road from KTM into Thamel passes through Gaushala and Chabahil. During morning and evening rush, roughly 8-10 am and 4-7 pm, the trip can stretch past an hour. For arrivals after midnight, the prepaid taxi counter stays open and fares don't increase. That said, Thamel's narrow lanes are quieter and easier to navigate at 2 am than at 2 pm, so a late landing has its upside. One thing to handle before you leave the terminal.
