What's happening in Sorrento this week?

Sorrento this week runs on its autumn shoulder rhythm, so do Pompeii and Herculaneum at opening, before the Naples tour coaches arrive. Take the earliest hydrofoil from Marina Piccola if Capri's sea cave matters to you. This weekend's clock change moves sunset at the Villa Comunale an hour earlier. Expect mild nights and warm, mostly dry afternoons.

Sorrento's week turns on the passeggiata. Between about 6pm and 8pm every evening, Corso Italia and the narrow Via San Cesareo fill with strolling families, and the lane smells of lemon peel from the limoncello shops and of espresso from the bars around Piazza Tasso. Weekdays this late in the season belong to Italians on short breaks and Northern European couples, but Saturday brings day-trippers from Naples, and Piazza Tasso stays loud with scooters past midnight. Sunday lunch is the big local meal of the week, so the tables along the water at Marina Grande fill with three-generation families eating for three hours. Book by Friday. Da Emilia, on the wooden pier at Marina Grande, is the safe first-timer choice: its gnocchi alla sorrentina arrives bubbling in a terracotta dish, with stringy mozzarella and a sweet tomato sauce, for roughly €12 to €14, which at this week's rate of 1 USD to 0.8909 EUR comes to about $13.50 to $15.70.

The ruins set the real schedule. Herculaneum has long closed on Wednesdays, so put it on Tuesday or Thursday. Its Ercolano Scavi stop on the Circumvesuviana is roughly 50 minutes from Sorrento, while Pompeii is about 30 minutes away at the Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri stop. Give Pompeii your highest-energy day and four hours, and wear shoes with grip, because the basalt paving is polished slick and the cart ruts are ankle-deep. Arrive at opening. Coach groups from Naples tend to land around 10:30am, and by noon the rooms at the Villa of the Mysteries are shoulder to shoulder. The Circumvesuviana is the weak point of every day trip here: carriages are crowded and stuffy, and pickpockets work the Naples end of the line, so keep your phone in a front pocket. Sorrento rates 7.2/10 for solo-traveler safety (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index), and most of the risk sits on that train, not in town.

At 1am on Tuesday, Sorrento was clear at 18.6°C with 76% humidity, and afternoons at this point in autumn tend to reach the low 20s, which puts this among the last good weeks for the sea. Capri hydrofoils from Marina Piccola take 20 to 25 minutes, and the Blue Grotto shuts whenever the swell rises, which happens more often as autumn advances, so take the first boat and go to the grotto before anything else. If it is closed, the chairlift up Monte Solaro from Anacapri is the best fallback. Ferries to Positano and Amalfi are seasonal and usually stop at the end of the season, so this week may be your last direct boat; after that the only way along the Amalfi Drive is the bus, and the curves turn stomachs. On Sunday Italy sets its clocks back one hour at 3am, moving sunset from roughly 6:15pm to about 5:15pm, so from Sunday, have your Villa Comunale aperitivo an hour earlier.
