Is Sorrento good for digital nomads in 2026?

Sorrento scores 6.2/10 for digital nomads (sourced from TTDI's editorial rubric): fibre reaches parts of town, but flats behind thick tufa walls often pull 30-100 Mbps, dedicated coworking barely exists, and rents in July double. Base yourself in Piano di Sorrento from October to April, budget about $2,580 a month, and head to Naples when you need a proper desk.

For a month-long stay, skip the lanes around Piazza Tasso. Via San Cesareo smells of lemon soap and fried pizzette until midnight, scooters on Corso Italia start revving before 7 am, and the nearest full-size supermarket means carrying bags uphill. Piano di Sorrento, two Circumvesuviana stops east, is the better base: it has larger supermarkets along its own Corso Italia, a self-service lavanderia or two, and regulars arguing in Neapolitan at the bar counter by 8 am. Off-season one-bedrooms in Piano tend to run €900-1,300 for a 30-day contract, while in Sorrento town from June to September you should expect €2,000 or more, and many owners there refuse anything but weekly tourist rates. Sant'Agnello sits between the two and is quieter at night, though its hills punish you on grocery runs. Marina Grande is lovely for a weekend, but over four weeks it feels damp, the smell of frying fish from its trattorie drifts in by 7 pm, and the climb back to town takes 15 minutes of stairs.

Ask every host for a Speedtest screenshot taken at the desk, not next to the router. Many Sorrento buildings are 19th-century tufa with walls around 60 cm thick, so a 1-Gbps FTTH line in the hallway can fall to 15 Mbps two rooms away. Listings that say "fibra" often mean FTTC, which runs roughly 100 Mbps down and 20 up: that handles Zoom fine but struggles with large uploads, so pack a mesh extender or a 10-metre Ethernet cable. Thunderstorms rolling off the Monti Lattari in October and November tend to cut the power for an hour or so, and a Jetogo eSIM with 20-30 GB covers those gaps, since TIM and Vodafone 4G or 5G in town usually gives 50-150 Mbps on a clear day.

Sorrento cafes are built for a cornetto and a 90-second espresso at the bar, not for a laptop, and Bar Fauno on Piazza Tasso charges table-service prices and, in high season, wants the seat back well before 11 am. We could not verify any coworking space in Sorrento that sells a monthly plan. That leaves three real options: work from your flat, use the Biblioteca Comunale reading room on weekday mornings, or negotiate a weekday rate in a hotel lobby along Via Correale. For real desks and meeting rooms, Naples is 65-70 minutes away on the Circumvesuviana, but count on hard plastic seats, air-con that fails in August, and pickpockets at Napoli Garibaldi. Hydrofoils from Marina Piccola reach Molo Beverello in about 35 minutes and cost €15-20 each way. On Saturday 24 October, Willie Peyote plays Casa della Musica Federico I in Naples, and because the last train back leaves before 11 pm, book a bed in the city for that night.

October is the best month to arrive: at 1 am tonight it was still 18.6°C and clear, Marina Piccola smells of salt and ferry diesel, and long-stay hotels on Trip.com are cutting rates as the season ends. From November until March, many restaurants and some hotels close, and the town goes quiet, which suits deep work and does nothing for your social life. A realistic month in Piano costs about €2,300 (roughly $2,580), covering about €1,100 in rent and €450 for groceries, with room left for a Da Franco pizza on Corso Italia twice a week (the fior di latte is still soft and milky when it reaches the paper), plus about €150 in trains and hydrofoils and a €90 Viator day trip to Herculaneum.

Coworking spaces

  • Biblioteca Comunale di Sorrento (free reading-room desks, weekday mornings, short hours)
  • Hotel lobby day rates along Via Correale (negotiate a weekday price)
  • Naples coworking near Napoli Centrale (65-70 minutes on the Circumvesuviana)

Visa options

Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any 180 across Schengen, and the EU Entry/Exit System now logs every crossing. For longer stays, Italy's digital nomad visa (in force since April 2024) asks for about €28,000 a year in income, a degree or equivalent work experience, health insurance and proof of housing. Apply at an Italian consulate before you leave, because you cannot convert a tourist stay once you are inside Italy.
