Is Sorrento good for solo travelers?

Sorrento works well for a first solo trip to Italy and less well for a long one, scoring 7.2/10 for solo-traveler safety (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index). Piazza Tasso stays lit and busy until midnight from April to October, and Pompeii is 30 minutes away by train. The real downsides are pickpockets on the Circumvesuviana and hotels that charge a single traveller the full double rate.

Sorrento is strong for four or five nights and thin after a week, because most visitors to the Amalfi Coast come as couples. You make friends here through organised days, not bar crawls. Seven Hostel in Sant'Agnello, a 10-minute walk east of Sorrento station, has a rooftop bar that mixes dorm guests and private-room guests over €6 spritzes at sunset, and in our experience it is the most reliable place in town to find a hiking partner for the next morning. Small-group Path of the Gods walks from Bomerano to Nocelle usually cap at 8 to 15 people, which leaves room for conversation without coach-tour fatigue. Cooking classes on the lemon farms above Sorrento tend to sit strangers at one long table, with flour-dusted counters and the sharp smell of fresh zest. Packaged Capri day tours often add a single supplement to the boat-plus-lunch price, so book the hydrofoil from Marina Piccola yourself and join a shared boat trip around the island once you land.

Eating alone in Sorrento is easier than in Rome. At lunch, trattorias on Via San Cesareo and around Piazza Sant'Antonino will seat one person at a two-top without any fuss, but it gets harder at 8.30pm in July and August, when places on Marina Grande such as Trattoria da Emilia may hold their tables for couples. Get there at 7pm, when the wooden deck smells of grilled octopus and the fishing boats knock against the quay, and you will probably get the seat with the view. For a drink, Fauno Bar on Piazza Tasso is where people on their own sit and watch the evening passeggiata. It is overpriced at about €8 for a spritz, but nobody rushes you. For conversation we prefer Bollicine on Via Accademia, a narrow wine bar that pours Campanian whites by the glass. Willie Peyote plays the Casa della Musica Federico I in Naples on Saturday 24 October, but the last Circumvesuviana back to Sorrento leaves before the show ends, so book a room in Naples for that night.

After dark is when the planning matters most. The Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi takes about 70 minutes, and pickpockets have long worked the crowded doors on the stretch through Ercolano, Torre Annunziata and Castellammare di Stabia, so sit in the first carriage behind the driver and keep your bag on your lap, not on the rack. In season, book the Campania Express instead: it makes fewer stops, has reserved seats, and costs roughly €15. Inside Sorrento the risk drops. Corso Italia stays lit and busy late in October, and at 1am on 20 October it was still a clear 18.6°C. The stone stairs from Villa Comunale down to Marina Piccola, and the lane to Marina Grande, are dim and empty after 11pm, and the Villa Comunale lift stops running before that, so if you come back from the port late, take a taxi up to Piazza Tasso. SITA buses to Positano leave from outside Sorrento station and are full by 9am in August.

Rooms are the weak point. Most Sorrento hotels charge one guest the full double rate, and true single rooms are rare outside a few family-run pensions near Corso Italia. For solo travellers on a budget, we'd point you toward a private room at Seven Hostel or at Hostel Le Sirene beside the station: either costs well under a hotel double in shoulder season and comes with other travellers to talk to. Search Trip.com with its single-occupancy filter before booking direct, because the filtered rate is sometimes lower than the double. At current rates $100 buys about €89, which in late October covers a decent private hostel room but not a sea-view hotel. Many Sorrento hotels close from November to March, and in those months the shop shutters stay down along Via San Cesareo.

Safety notes

The main risk is pickpocketing on the Circumvesuviana between Naples and Sorrento: ride in the first carriage and keep your bag on your lap. Women report little street harassment in central Sorrento. The stairs down to Marina Grande and Marina Piccola are dim and empty after 11pm, so take a taxi up to Piazza Tasso instead, and agree on the taxi fare before you get in.
