What's happening in Jaipur this week?

Jaipur this week runs on dry post-monsoon air and the build-up to Diwali, with nights cool and clear and the Walled City bazaars staying lit and crowded well after dark. Get to Amber Fort when it opens at 8am, save Nahargarh for a weekday sunset, and count on Delhi weekenders filling the hill forts on Saturday and Sunday.

Once the monsoon clears, Jaipur becomes walkable again, and the whole week bends around the heat. At the latest reading, 10:30pm brought 22.6°C under a clear sky with 56% humidity, but afternoons still push into the low 30s. Split every day in two. Amber Fort opens at 8am, and by 10am the coaches from Delhi are lined up below the ramparts: arrive at opening and the sandstone ramp still feels cool underfoot, the mirrored ceiling of Sheesh Mahal close to empty. Hawa Mahal is a morning sight too, its pink honeycomb facade facing east and glowing before 9am, and the best view comes with a masala chai, about ₹80 to ₹150, from the rooftop cafes across Siredeori Bazaar. Between 1pm and 4pm, copy Jaipur families: eat a long lunch, then nap with the curtains drawn. The city restarts after 5pm, when scooter horns at Badi Chaupar get louder and the air smells of frying onions and incense.

Weekdays and weekends feel like different cities. Delhi sits four to five hours up the highway, so Saturday and Sunday bring car-loads of weekenders to the hill forts above Amber, and the road up to Nahargarh Fort jams by 5pm on weekends with the sunset terrace turning into a selfie queue. Go Tuesday to Thursday instead, when you can hear the chai seller's kettle and watch the Walled City turn grey-pink below. Tuesdays and Saturdays belong to Hanuman: Khole ke Hanuman Ji, in the hills off the Delhi bypass, fills with devotees and the clang of brass bells, while on Saturdays the roadside Shani shrines collect offerings of mustard oil. Govind Dev Ji Temple, beside the City Palace, runs on a daily clock of seven aartis, with the curtain over the deity closing between them. The evening sandhya aarti is the loudest of the seven, with conch shells and a packed marble hall, so time your visit to it. The main forts and the City Palace open daily, so Jaipur has no Monday shutdown to plan around.

This is also the Diwali run-up, and it reshapes every evening. Johari Bazaar, Bapu Bazaar and MI Road hang canopies of lights over the street in the weeks before the festival, and after 7pm the Walled City fills with families buying sweets, saris and clay diyas. Autos can sit for 20 minutes at Choti Chaupar, so walk the shaded arcades instead. Many Walled City shops keep one weekly closing day, often Sunday, so ask your hotel before you plan a shopping morning. For food, start simple. Lassiwala on MI Road pours thick, cold lassi into clay kulhads from the morning and closes when the batch runs out, usually by mid-afternoon. Rawat Mishtan Bhandar near Polo Victory cinema sells pyaaz kachori, a flaky fried pastry stuffed with peppery spiced onion, for well under ₹100, and Laxmi Mishthan Bhandar on Johari Bazaar stacks Diwali boxes of kaju katli, a mild cashew fudge that is the safest first sweet for a nervous palate.

Money is easier than it looks. One US dollar bought ₹94.93 at the latest rate check, which means a ₹200 auto ride from Sindhi Camp to the Walled City comes to about $2.10. Agree the fare before you get in, or book through Uber or Ola, both of which run across Jaipur. The two-day composite ticket covers eight state-run sites, including most of the morning sights above, and pays for itself once you visit three. Albert Hall Museum in Ram Niwas Garden floodlights its sandstone domes after dark and has run evening hours, making it the right slot for a jet-lagged first night. Wikivoyage's Jaipur safety section warns about gem-shop scams, and drivers on the Amber road still pitch 'factory visits' that end at a commission counter. Say no once, firmly, and they move on.
