What's the must-see thing in Jaipur?

Maharaja Man Singh I commissioned the fort, and four more rulers expanded it over the next 150 years. The result feels less like a single building and more like a small fortified city climbing the hillside in terraces. The Sheesh Mahal on the upper level is the room that stops people. Thousands of convex mirror fragments line the ceiling and walls; a guard will sometimes hold up a lighter to demonstrate, and the flame scatters across every surface like daylight hitting water. Foreign-visitor entry costs 500 INR (about $5.25), with a composite ticket at 1,000 INR covering Jaipur's other government monuments too.

Skip the elephant ride up the ramp. The 20-minute walk is paved and partly shaded by the fort walls, and the elephant operation has faced ongoing animal welfare concerns. The walk gives you the better photo angle of the fort above the waterline. Inside, move quickly through the Diwan-i-Aam and spend your time in the private quarters above. The latticed jharokha windows in the Zenana catch cross-breezes even when Jaipur hits 43°C in May. You'll feel warm air pushing through carved sandstone screens, carrying the dry smell of heated rock and neem leaves.

Back in the walled city, Hawa Mahal and City Palace sit within a 15-minute walk of each other near Badi Chaupar square. Hawa Mahal is the facade, not the building behind it. Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh commissioned 953 pink sandstone windows in 1799 so royal women could watch street festivals without being seen, and the most interesting perspective is from the chai stalls across Hawa Mahal Road, not from inside. Entry is 50 INR; five minutes covers it. City Palace, built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1732, is the heavier commitment. The Pitam Niwas Chowk courtyard has four painted gates representing the seasons, and the textile gallery holds robes worn by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I, who reportedly stood 2.1 metres tall. September sits deep in Jaipur's monsoon season. Afternoon rain arrives most days, humidity hovers around 76%, and mornings start at a comfortable 25°C before the heat builds. The trade-off tends to be worth it. The lake below the fort walls, which dries to cracked mud by April, fills properly during the rains and reflects the sandstone on still mornings. Crowds thin noticeably compared to the October-through-March peak. If a downpour catches you in the afternoon, the Albert Hall Museum in Ram Niwas Garden makes a solid backup. It opened in 1887 and holds one of Rajasthan's better collections of miniature paintings. Entry is 150 INR.
