Where should I stay in Philadelphia?

Stay in Center City near Rittenhouse Square for a first visit. You're within a 20-minute walk of Independence Hall, Reading Terminal Market, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Budget $150-280 for a mid-range hotel. Old City works if you'd rather wake up next to the Liberty Bell, though restaurant options thin out after 10pm.

Rittenhouse Square is the right answer for a first trip to Philadelphia. The park sits at 18th and Walnut, ringed by hotels where the air conditioning hits you like a wall after July's 33°C sidewalks. From the square, Independence Hall is a 20-minute walk east down Walnut Street, and Reading Terminal Market is 12 minutes north. The Kimpton Hotel Palomar on Sansom Street runs $180-260 in summer. The Sofitel at 120 South 17th Street sits around $200-280. Both are close enough to Parc, the French bistro on the square's west side, that you'll hear the clink of wine glasses from the sidewalk tables at 8pm. SEPTA's Broad Street Line stops at Walnut-Locust, 4 blocks east, and connects you to South Philadelphia's stadium complex in 15 minutes. The trade-off is noise. Walnut and Chestnut Streets carry bus traffic until midnight, and weekend nights bring bar crowds along Sansom and 18th. If that bothers you, book above the 5th floor or bring earplugs.

Old City puts you steps from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, both dating to 1753, on Chestnut Street between 5th and 6th. The neighborhood covers about 8 blocks, and it's quieter than Rittenhouse after dinner. The Thomas Bond House, a bed-and-breakfast in a 1769 building at 129 South 2nd Street, tends to run $140-190 and smells like old wood and fresh coffee at 7am. 2nd Street between Market and Chestnut has a solid restaurant row. Fork, at 306 Market Street, has been a Philadelphia institution since 1997. That said, Old City empties out by 10pm on weeknights. You'll hear your own footsteps on the cobblestones. The SEPTA Market-Frankford Line stops at 2nd Street, giving you a straight shot to 30th Street Station or Fishtown in under 15 minutes. If you're arriving at Philadelphia International Airport, the Airport Regional Rail line runs to Jefferson Station, a 10-minute walk from most Old City hotels, for around $6.75 one way.

For rates under $120, look at University City across the Schuylkill River. The neighborhood wraps around the University of Pennsylvania campus near 34th and Walnut, and the Penn Museum of Archaeology, founded in 1887, is right there if you need a rainy-afternoon plan. Baltimore Avenue between 43rd and 50th Streets has Ethiopian and Korean restaurants where $12 buys a full plate. The trolley on 36th Street connects to Center City in 10 minutes. Fishtown, north of Old City along Frankford Avenue, has turned into Philadelphia's strongest food neighborhood over the past decade. Wm. Mulherin's Sons at 1355 N. Front Street charges $190-270 but sits above a restaurant where the wood-fired pizza oven throws heat you can feel from the bar. Budget travelers might find short-term rentals in Fishtown for $80-120. Mind you, Fishtown is a 20-minute ride on the Market-Frankford Line from Independence Hall, so it works better if you're more interested in eating well than checking off historical sites on day one.

A few neighborhoods look affordable on booking sites but will leave a first-timer uneasy. Kensington, north of Fishtown above Lehigh Avenue, has been dealing with a visible opioid crisis for years. Avoid it. North Philadelphia between Broad Street and the river, above Spring Garden Street, lacks the restaurants and transit density a visitor needs. The area right around 30th Street Station is fine for a train connection but has almost no street life after 6pm. Worth noting, Philadelphia's summers are humid. Late June currently sits around 22-33°C with 65-70% humidity, and the pavement radiates heat well past sunset. If you're visiting between June and September, prioritize a hotel with strong air conditioning over a converted loft with window units. Winter drops to -2 to 5°C from December through February, and the wind off the Delaware River at Penn's Landing cuts through anything lighter than a proper coat. Late March through May tends to be the comfortable window for walking 15,000 steps a day.
