Is Key West family-friendly?
Key West scores 6.2/10 for family friendliness (see the TTDI Family-Friendliness Index), and the two things dragging that number down are the adult bar scene on Duval Street and the many guesthouses that turn children away. Kids aged 4 to 12 get the most out of Fort Zachary Taylor, the Key West Aquarium, and the Butterfly Conservatory. Book a suite, bring a carrier, and check the Fantasy Fest dates in late October.
Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is the best family afternoon on the island. The beach is coarse coral rubble, not sand, so pack water shoes for anyone under 10, and claim a picnic table under the Australian pines before 11am because the shade is gone by then. On calm days, snorkelers aged 8 and up can see parrotfish off the rocks, and the dark brick casemates inside the fort usually keep younger kids busy for about 30 minutes. The Key West Aquarium at Mallory Square feels its age, but the touch tank and guided shark feedings hold a 3-year-old's attention. The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory on Duval Street is a damp, warm glass dome where blue morphos land on shirts. Allow 45 minutes. Higgs Beach has the free Astro City playground across Atlantic Boulevard, and part of it is shaded.
Strollers struggle in Old Town. Sidewalks on Whitehead Street and Caroline Street are often about 3 feet wide, pushed up by banyan roots and blocked by parked scooters, so a soft carrier works better for kids under 3. Key West is at least flat, topping out near 18 feet at Solares Hill. The free Duval Loop bus runs a circuit through Old Town and generally takes folded strollers. The Conch Tour Train covers the main sights in roughly 75 minutes with seats and a canopy, so it's worth a look for tired legs. Check its current child fares before booking. Mallory Square and the Fort Zachary Taylor concession have restrooms, but the Duval Street bars rarely have changing tables. The bigger problem is the heat between 11am and 3pm: at 7pm on 19 October 2026 it was still 27.7°C with 70% humidity. The queue at the Southernmost Point buoy on Whitehead Street has no shade at all, so take the photo before 9am or skip it.
Bed configuration is where Key West trips tend to go wrong. Many Old Town guesthouses on Fleming Street and Eaton Street are adults-only or set a minimum age of 16, and the ones that do take kids often have a single queen bed in a converted conch-house room. Look instead at the resorts on the Atlantic side near Smathers Beach and Casa Marina, where two-queen rooms and suites are standard. Another option is a condo rental in Truman Annex, which usually comes with a kitchen, a washer-dryer and a shared pool. Hotels on North Roosevelt Boulevard in New Town cost less, but they are about a 10-minute drive from Mallory Square. Blue Heaven on Thomas Street serves breakfast in a courtyard where hens and roosters wander under the tables, and that often buys 20 quiet minutes. Conch fritters are mild, crunchy and a safe bet for picky eaters. Kermit's on Elizabeth Street sells frozen key lime pie on a stick, tart and cold. If your child has a shellfish allergy, ask before ordering anything fried, because many kitchens share their fryers.
Skip Duval Street north of Southard Street after 8pm: that's when Sloppy Joe's and the neighboring bars get loud and the sidewalk smells of spilled beer. Fantasy Fest usually takes up the last ten days of October with adult costumes and body paint, so if you're arriving that week, check the 2026 parade dates and keep children off Duval during the parades. The Ernest Hemingway House tour is a 30-minute talk aimed at adults, and kids under 7 mostly want the free-roaming cats, many of them six-toed. The Dry Tortugas ferry takes more than two hours each way across open water, so it suits kids 7 and up who don't get seasick. For a rainy day, the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center in Truman Annex is the better choice: it is free and air-conditioned, and it currently opens Tuesday through Saturday. Hurricane season runs until 30 November, so a policy with trip-cancellation cover is worth buying for autumn visits.
Streets are uneven; baby carriers travel better than strollers.

Child safety notes
Heat and sun are the main risks, so plan shade and water breaks between 11am and 3pm. Rental scooters and bikes crowd the narrow Old Town streets, so hold hands at Duval Street crossings. Coral rubble and sea urchins can cut bare feet at Fort Zachary Taylor, and most Key West beaches have no lifeguards. The nearest emergency room is Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island.
