Where to stay
Old Town between Duval Street and the waterfront for a first visit. You can walk to the Hemingway House, Fort Zachary Taylor, and the Southernmost Point buoy without ever needing a car. Budget $180-$300 for a guesthouse on a quieter cross street like Fleming or Eaton. New Town runs $120-$200 but requires a scooter or taxi after dark.

Must-see
Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park at the island's southwest tip gives you Key West's best beach and a Civil War-era fort in one stop. The Hemingway House on Whitehead Street runs a close second. Skip the Southernmost Point buoy line on your first morning and come back when the cruise ships leave.

Food culture
Key West food runs on three things. Cuban coffee and pressed Cuban mix sandwiches from the island's decades-old cafes. Conch, fried into fritters or simmered in chowder from the Historic Seaport kitchens. And whatever the shrimp boats pulled in that morning. The best eating is off Duval Street, on Stock Island and the side streets south of Truman Avenue.

Airport to city
Key West International Airport (EYW) sits about 2 miles from Duval Street. A taxi or Uber runs $12-25 and takes 10 minutes. Most visitors don't need a rental car since Old Town is flat and walkable, and parking costs $4-5 per hour at metered spots. Skip the rental counter and put that money toward dinner on the waterfront.

Cost per day
Key West runs $100/day budget (hostel dorm, bike rental, Cuban counter food), $275 midrange (boutique hotel after resort fees, two restaurant meals, one attraction), $550+ luxury (Casa Marina or Sunset Key, charter fishing, cocktails on Duval). Island isolation drives prices 20-30% above mainland Florida. Free beaches and sunset rituals offset the sting, but accommodation is the expense that bites hardest.
