12 packing essentials every Key West visitor brings in 2026

Pack reef-safe mineral sunscreen first for Key West, with polarized sunglasses a close second. Sunscreen wins on the tie-breaker of regret: Old Town shops charge resort prices, and a burn on day one can cost you a Dry Tortugas snorkel. Add zinc oxide, a refillable bottle, and a mask that already fits your face.

We scored each item on three counts. The first is how much Key West itself calls for it, from the open-water boat trips out to the reef to the 70-mile run west to Dry Tortugas National Park. The second is value per dollar: a tube of zinc bought on Duval Street tends to cost about twice what it does at a pharmacy back home. The third count carries the most weight, measuring how often travellers on Wikivoyage and Keys forums say they wished they had packed the item. Sunscreen and polarized lenses scored near the top on all three. A bike lock came in lowest because Key West rental fleets usually supply one.

The most common mistake is packing for a beach holiday when Key West is a walking town. Old Town is compact and the free Duval Loop bus covers most of it, so visitors often spend six or seven hours a day on foot between Mallory Square, the Hemingway House on Whitehead Street, and the Southernmost point buoy, and flip-flops give out by day two. The second mistake is underestimating the October humidity: at 7pm on 19 October 2026, after sunset, Open-Meteo still logged 27.7°C with 70% humidity, and a cotton T-shirt stays damp in that air until midnight. The third mistake is counting on Key West International Airport (EYW) to fill the gaps. The terminal is small, and its shops mostly stock snacks and magazines.

Mineral sunscreen is not the right first pick for everyone. If you come in on the Key West Express ferry from Fort Myers Beach for one evening on Duval Street, with no beach or boat time planned, you will get more from strapped sandals and a light layer for the air-conditioned bars. Coming in January or February, you might rank the packable layer higher. A museum-heavy day in the Truman Annex, built around the Harry S. Truman Little White House and the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum, also lowers sunscreen's ranking. That said, the walk between those two sites along Front Street is mostly in full sun.

The full list

  1. Reef-safe mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide, SPF 30+)

Snorkel boats to Sand Key and the Dry Tortugas leave you on open water for hours with no shade, so sunscreen matters here more than on most trips. Zinc formulas are kinder to the coral than oxybenzone ones, and the same tube can cost $20 or more in a Duval Street shop.

Shop Reef-safe mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide, SPF 30+)
  2. Polarized sunglasses

By 10am the glare off the shallows near Mallory Square is fierce. Polarized lenses cut through it, and on a backcountry flats or kayak trip they also let you spot rays and nurse sharks under the surface.

    Shop Polarized sunglasses
  3. Insulated refillable water bottle

The walk from the Hemingway House to the Southernmost point buoy takes about 10 minutes, mostly in full sun. Many Old Town cafes and guesthouses will refill a bottle for free.

    Shop Insulated refillable water bottle
  4. Your own snorkel mask

The Yankee Freedom ferry to Dry Tortugas lends gear, but a loaner mask that leaks spoils the reef along the Fort Jefferson moat wall. A mask fitted at home costs about $40.

    Shop Your own snorkel mask
  5. Water shoes

The beach at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is coarse crushed coral and rock rather than sand, and the best snorkeling there starts over a rocky shelf near the jetties.

    Shop Water shoes
  6. Picaridin insect repellent

No-see-ums come out at dusk around Higgs Beach and the African Cemetery grounds beside it, and Picaridin handles them without DEET's greasy feel in the muggy Atlantic-side air.

    Shop Picaridin insect repellent
  7. Packable rain shell

Hurricane season runs to 30 November. Afternoon storms often roll over Old Town for 20 to 40 minutes, and a shell folds small enough to carry on the Duval Loop.

    Shop Packable rain shell
  8. Quick-dry or linen clothing

Dinner in Bahama Village and along lower Duval Street is casual. A quick-dry shirt dries between Blue Heaven and the next bar. Cotton does not.

    Shop Quick-dry or linen clothing
  9. Wide-brim hat

The line for a photo at the Southernmost point buoy can run 30 minutes with no shade, and the ramparts at Fort Zachary Taylor offer little cover either.

    Shop Wide-brim hat
  10. Sandals with a heel strap

Banyan and gumbo-limbo roots have buckled the Old Town sidewalks, so a heel strap keeps you steady on the walk from the Truman Annex gate to Mallory Square.

Shop Sandals with a heel strap
  11. 10-litre dry bag

Sunset sails from the Historic Seaport at Key West Bight and kayak trips into the backcountry mangroves soak phones and wallets. A basic bag costs about $15.

    Shop 10-litre dry bag
  12. Motion-sickness tablets

The ferry to Dry Tortugas takes about two and a half hours each way across open Gulf water, and winter swells can make it rough. Take a tablet before you board at the Key West Bight terminal.

    Shop Motion-sickness tablets
