How do I get around Kauai?

Rent a car at Lihue Airport (LIH), and book it before you land. Kauai's road network is one two-lane highway in two segments. Route 56 runs north from Lihue toward Princeville. Route 50 runs west toward Waimea. The two never connect, because 17 miles of Na Pali Coast sea cliffs, some rising 4,000 feet, block any through-road. A drive from Poipu on the south shore to Ke'e Beach at the north shore's far end takes about 90 minutes with no traffic, and you'll retrace the same road on the way back. Lihue's five rental agencies share a lot a 3-minute shuttle from the terminal, but inventory runs thin from December through March and June through August. Expect $80 to $120 per day in peak season. A compact SUV handles the unpaved 5-mile track to Polihale State Park on the west side. Sedans work for everything else.

The Kauai Bus runs two routes from the Lihue hub, one north to Hanalei and one west to Kekaha. Fare is $2 per ride, $4 for a day pass. Weekday service runs roughly 6 AM to 10 PM, with reduced Saturday hours and no Sunday service. The real problem is frequency. Buses come every 60 to 90 minutes, and stops sit along the highway rather than at beaches or trailheads. You might wait an hour in the midday humidity. The asphalt pushes heat through your sandals, and most stops have no shade. Uber and Lyft both operate on Kauai, but driver supply is thin. A ride from Lihue to Poipu runs about $25 to $35, with wait times of 15 to 30 minutes. After 9 PM, you may not find a driver. Local taxis run about $3 per mile but need a phone call, not a street hail.

The north shore drive from Kapaa is where the single-road geography bites. Kapaa town slows to 10 mph during morning and evening rush, and the smell of kalua pork drifts in from roadside plate-lunch trucks while you idle. There is no alternate route, so add 30 minutes to any trip through Kapaa between 7 and 9 AM or 4 and 6 PM. Past Princeville, the road crosses a series of one-lane bridges. The side with fewer cars yields, and you flash your headlights to say thanks. Between Hanalei and Ke'e Beach, the road winds through heavy canopy where rain arrives without warning and red mud slicks the pavement. Even dry, that 10-mile stretch takes 40 minutes. After heavy rain, the road to Ke'e closes entirely. Check Hawaii DOT road alerts before a north shore morning, or you'll sit in a turnaround line at the Hanalei bridge with humid air pressing in through the windows.

Walking between Kauai's towns is not an option. Sidewalks barely exist outside Lihue and the Kapaa strip, and highway shoulders are narrow with fast traffic. The one good stretch on foot is the Ke Ala Hele Makalae coastal path, about 4 paved miles between Lydgate Beach Park and Kapaa town, with salt wind off the water and the sound of surf the whole way. Bike rentals from shops like Coconut Coasters in Kapaa run $25 to $40 per day, and that path is where they belong. No bike lanes exist on the highway, and trucks pass close. For Waimea Canyon or the overlooks above the Na Pali cliffs, the climb to Pu'u O Kila rises 3,400 feet over 18 miles. That is an athletic event, not transportation. Save the bikes for the coastal path and drive everything else.
