Top 10 places to book a hotel in Kauai in 2026

Booking.com is the strongest place to book a Kauai hotel in 2026, covering the widest spread of Poipu resorts, Princeville condos, and Kapaʻa motels in a single search. The free-cancellation filter is what puts it at #1 on an island where north shore roads close in heavy rain. Expedia runs a close second for travellers who want a Līhuʻe Airport rental car bundled into the same booking.

We scored each booking channel on three things, multiplied together. The first was breadth of Kauai inventory: hotels sit in clusters, with Poipu on the south shore holding the big resorts, Princeville and Hanalei holding the north shore condos and cottages, and the Coconut Coast around Kapaʻa and Wailua holding most of the mid-priced hotels, so a site with 40 Poipu units and almost nothing in Kapaʻa covers half the island at best. Cancellation flexibility came second, and on Kauai that matters more than it sounds: flash floods in April 2018 closed Kuhio Highway past Hanalei for roughly 13 months, and the road to Hāʻena still shuts when the rivers rise. Transparent pricing was the third weight, and a channel lost points when the nightly rate it showed in search results didn't match the total at checkout.

The most common mistake is choosing on price across the whole island rather than on drive time. Līhuʻe Airport (LIH) sits on the east side, Princeville is about 50 minutes north in light traffic and longer when the Kapaʻa bypass backs up in the late afternoon, and Poipu is about 30 minutes south through the Tree Tunnel on Maluhia Road. The Kauaʻi Bus, the county service, runs along the main highways, but its timetable is thin, and most visitors still need a car, so a cheap room far from your plans can cost you two extra hours of driving a day. The second mistake is forgetting the taxes: state and county lodging taxes plus general excise tax currently add roughly 18 to 19 percent to the room rate, and some search pages leave them out until the last screen.

The third mistake is booking a vacation rental without checking whether it's legal. Kauai County limits short-term rentals mostly to Visitor Destination Areas such as Poipu, Princeville, and parts of the Coconut Coast, so a cottage in Hanalei or Wainiha needs an older nonconforming-use permit, and that permit number should appear in the listing. If it doesn't, the booking may be cancelled under you. A legal rental near the end of the road at Hāʻena State Park does give you something in return: day visitors there need advance entry or shuttle reservations, while guests staying close by can walk in early to the Kalalau trailhead.

Booking.com is not the right pick for everyone. Hotel loyalty members may do better booking direct: the Kauai Marriott sits on Kalapaki Beach beside Nāwiliwili Harbor, and points stays there count only when you book through Marriott. Costco members planning a week in Poipu will often find a Grand Hyatt Kauai package with a rental car included that third-party sites can't match. Travellers heading west for Waimea Canyon State Park and Russian Fort Elizabeth face a different problem, because lodging in Waimea and Kekaha is thin on every platform, and calling the few west side inns directly tends to turn up rooms the big sites never list.

The full list

  1. Booking.com

It lists the widest mix on Kauai, from Poipu resorts to Princeville condos to budget motels along the Kapaʻa strip. Most of these let you cancel for free until a few days out, which matters if rain closes the road to Hanalei. Since the FTC fee rule took effect in May 2025, the total it shows includes resort fees.

  2. Expedia

It has close to the same Kauai hotel coverage as Booking.com, and you can add a Līhuʻe Airport rental car to the same booking, which matters on an island where most resorts are 30 to 50 minutes from the terminal. Package rates are often non-refundable, so check before you pay.

  3. Hotels.com

It shares Expedia's Kauai inventory, so Coconut Coast hotels in Wailua and Kapaʻa appear with the same cancellation terms. The main draw is the reward-night program, which suits repeat visitors who come back to the same Poipu or Princeville base each year.

  4. Vrbo

It is the deepest source for whole condos in Poipu Kai, Princeville, and the Kapaʻa oceanfront, which suit families who want a kitchen. Cleaning fees now show up in the total price. Check that the listing shows a Kauai County rental permit number, and read each host's cancellation policy, because terms vary.

  5. Trip.com

It covers the main Kauai resort clusters in Poipu, Līhuʻe and the Coconut Coast, with clear total-price displays and many rates you can cancel for free, though if you're looking for independent cottages in Hanalei or on the west side, Vrbo or Airbnb will give you more to choose from.

  6. Costco Travel

For members only, it bundles Poipu resorts such as the Grand Hyatt Kauai and Koloa Landing with a rental car and sometimes a resort credit. Cancellation terms are generous and the price shown is the price you pay, though the selection outside the large resorts is small.

  7. Marriott Bonvoy (direct)

Marriott runs several of the island's biggest properties, including the Kauai Marriott on Kalapaki Beach a few minutes from LIH and the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach in Kapaʻa, and booking direct is the only way to earn and use points there. Expect a daily resort fee in the total.

  8. Google Hotels

It's a fast way to compare one Princeville or Poipu property across several sites with taxes included, but it doesn't take bookings itself, so cancellation terms depend on whichever site you click through to. It also misses many permitted Hanalei rentals.

  9. Airbnb

It has the strongest stock of small cottages and ohana units around Kōloa, Kīlauea and Hanalei, along with some upcountry rooms above Kapaʻa, and you can switch on a total-price display. Many hosts use strict cancellation terms, so check the policy and the permit number before you book a north shore stay.

  10. Hilton Honors (direct)

Its Kauai portfolio is small, with most of it in the Wailua and Kapaʻa area near Wailua Falls and ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls, where direct rates usually allow free cancellation up to a day or two before arrival and members get points and free Wi-Fi. Outside the Coconut Coast there's little to choose from.
