When's the best time to visit Lima in 2026?

Lima sits in a coastal desert that receives less than 15mm of rain annually, so the timing question is not about rain. It is about garúa. From June through November, a thick grey fog settles over the city most mornings and sometimes never lifts. Temperatures drop to 14-17°C, and everything feels damp against your skin. Your jacket picks up moisture on a 10-minute walk along the Malecón in Miraflores. The Pacific turns grey-green, and the clifftop viewpoints along Miraflores lose their ocean views by mid-afternoon. Limeños call these months invierno, and they are not being dramatic. Today, mid-August, conditions sit at 21.2°C under full overcast with 78% humidity. That is mild for Lima's winter. June and July run 3-4 degrees colder.

December through April, the garúa retreats. Mornings break clear by 9am, temperatures reach 26-28°C, and Barranco's bar strips stay loud past midnight. You hear cumbia drifting from open doorways near Puente de los Suspiros, and the surf breaks at Punta Roquitas draw wetsuited locals by 6am. The Pacific warms to around 21-23°C, still cold by Caribbean standards but swimmable at Playa Agua Dulce in Chorrillos. This is when Lima's restaurant scene moves outdoors. Tables fill the sidewalks along Calle Berlín in Miraflores, the ceviche at La Mar tastes brightest with the fish at its January peak, and the charcoal smoke from anticuchos grilling on Avenida 28 de Julio carries for blocks. January and February are the warmest months. Weekend crowds at the Circuito Mágico del Agua in Parque de la Reserva grow, but Lima is a city of 10 million. A 20-minute wait for a table at Isolina in Barranco on a Saturday night is about the worst of it.

Miraflores hotel rates rise 25-40% from mid-December through Carnival in February. New Year's Eve books out smaller properties along Calle de la Pizza weeks early. If you are price-sensitive, May and November sit at the edges. May still gets afternoon sun before the garúa commits, and November sees the first breaks in the fog. A mid-range hotel in Miraflores runs 200-280 soles per night in those months, roughly 60-83 USD at the current rate of 3.38 PEN per dollar. Mind you, most of Lima's major indoor attractions work in any season. The Larco Museum in Pueblo Libre, founded in 1926, keeps its pre-Columbian ceramics at a constant cool temperature behind thick colonial walls. The Cathedral of Lima in the Centro Histórico, dating to 1535, keeps the same stone-cool interior in August as in January.

Skip July and August if you have flexibility. These are Lima's greyest months, and they overlap with Fiestas Patrias on July 28-29, Peru's independence holiday. The parade route through Plaza Mayor is worth seeing if you are already in-country, but peak domestic tourism combined with school holidays and unbroken overcast makes it the worst value window of the year. The city smells different in winter too. Dampness pulls diesel exhaust and cooking smoke low to the pavement, and the briny sea-salt edge you catch on the Malecón in summer turns flat and metallic. To be fair, Lima still works for first-time visitors in any month.
