Where should I stay in Lima?

Miraflores. That's the answer for a first visit to Lima. The neighborhood sits on sandstone cliffs roughly 70 meters above the Pacific, and from Parque Kennedy you can walk to most of what matters in under 15 minutes. The Malecón, a 10-kilometer clifftop path, runs south toward Barranco, and even on the gray garúa mornings that define Lima's May-through-November winter, the salt air and the sound of waves carry up from the surf below. Budget $70-130 per night for a well-run mid-range hotel on or near Avenida José Larco. At 3.38 soles to the dollar, a 400-sol room works out to about $118. The Metropolitano bus rapid transit stops at Ricardo Palma. It connects you to Centro Histórico in 40 minutes for 2.50 soles. Miraflores is walkable in a way that surprises people who picture Lima as a 10-million-person city.

Barranco sits 15 minutes south of Miraflores by taxi (8-12 soles) and is the better pick if you've been to Lima before or if restaurants matter more to you than proximity to Parque Kennedy. The Puente de los Suspiros anchors the neighborhood's center. The streets drop toward the ocean and still show cracked plaster and bougainvillea that Miraflores polished away years ago. Rooms run $50-90. You'll hear live criolla music from the peñas on weekend nights and smell the char-smoke of anticuchos on Avenida Grau. By Sunday morning the neighborhood goes quiet enough to hear pigeons. Mind you, Barranco's trade-offs are real. Late-night walks back from Miraflores on foot are not advised, and taxi-app coverage gets patchy after 1am. Central, which held the No. 1 position on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list in 2023, operates from Barranco.

San Isidro suits business travelers and anyone who wants residential quiet. El Olivar, a 23-acre grove of olive trees planted in the 1560s, sits at the neighborhood's center, and hotel rates run $90-180 for international chains. Fewer restaurants per block than Miraflores, fewer bars than Barranco. The Huaca Huallamarca, a pre-Inca adobe pyramid, stands between modern apartment towers near Nicolás de Rivera, lit gold against Lima's gray sky at dusk. Centro Histórico holds the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral of Lima (founded 1535), and the Government Palace. Hotels near the Plaza run $30-60, and the colonial arcades reward a morning visit. After dark, most Centro blocks empty and petty crime picks up. Visit Centro for 4-5 hours. Sleep in Miraflores.

Lima's coastal winter runs May through November. Right now the temperature sits around 21°C with 78% humidity, and the sky stays overcast for weeks. The air feels damp, not cold, even along the Malecón. A light jacket handles Lima's winter. Pool and rooftop amenities at Miraflores hotels are decorative until December, so don't pay extra for them. Most mid-range properties in Miraflores include breakfast, and you should take it because Lima's morning café scene is sparse before 10am. Avoid Callao, La Victoria, and San Juan de Lurigancho entirely. In Lima, never hail a taxi from the street. The Larco Museum, founded in 1926 in Pueblo Libre, is one of the few major sights outside these safe-corridor neighborhoods. A round-trip from Miraflores to Pueblo Libre runs about 25-30 soles.
