Is Cozumel good for digital nomads in 2026?

Cozumel scores 6.2/10 for digital-nomad suitability (sourced from TTDI's editorial rubric). Telmex or Totalplay fibre in San Miguel's inland colonias is reliable enough for a video call, but storm-season outages and almost no dedicated coworking drag that number down. Budget about US$1,600 a month, enter on Mexico's tourist permit, and treat Playa del Carmen, a 45-minute ferry ride away, as your backup office.

Rent inland, not on Avenida Rafael Melgar. The waterfront condos north of the ferry pier photograph well, but on cruise days four or more ships tie up at the Punta Langosta, International and Puerta Maya piers, and you hear horns, idling tour-bus diesel and bar karaoke from the Melgar strip until about 10 pm. Colonia 10 de Abril and Colonia Adolfo López Mateos sit 8 to 15 blocks east of the main plaza, quieter than the waterfront and walkable to a tortillería, and a furnished one-bedroom on a 3- to 6-month lease there runs roughly 12,000 to 18,000 MXN (about US$650 to US$975). The same flat costs US$1,200 or more on Airbnb. Before you pay, ask the host for a speed test taken that week and the provider's name: Telmex Infinitum or Totalplay fibre usually delivers 50 to 200 Mbps, while a shared building router on coax can drop under 10 Mbps at 8 pm when every unit is streaming.

Bring a small UPS for the modem. From June to October, afternoon thunderstorms roll in off the Yucatán Channel, the air goes heavy and smells of wet limestone first, and brief CFE brownouts often follow. Island coworking is thin and changes from one season to the next, so check what is open when you land rather than trusting a 2023 blog post. Most remote workers rotate between cafes. Rock'n Java, on the south end of Melgar, has outlets and breezy tables, and the staff will put up with a two-hour laptop session if you order lunch. Café Chiapas, a few blocks inland from the plaza, serves strong Chiapas coffee for under 50 MXN, though it is small and the grinder is loud, so keep it for email, not calls. The Starbucks at Punta Langosta has cold air conditioning and a steady connection, but on ship days cruise passengers pack it between 10 am and 3 pm. Check the port's cruise calendar every Sunday and put your call-heavy work on the days with no ships.

Chedraui and Mega Soriana on the south side of San Miguel cover the basics for groceries, but the Mercado Municipal is the cheaper place for papaya, limes, and cochinita pibil tortas still warm in their paper. Lavanderías charge roughly 25 to 35 MXN a kilo and hand clothes back folded the next day, smelling of floral softener. A realistic month looks like this: rent around US$800, food around US$450, and a CFE bill that reaches US$100 if you run the AC at night. A rented scooter costs about US$250, and you need one, because the cross-island road to Punta Sur and the ruins at San Gervasio is too long to walk. Weekend dives in Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park cost extra, and they are the main reason most people come to the island. Rents rise from December to April, so arrive in May or November if you want to negotiate.

Visa options

Most nomads enter on Mexico's tourist permit (FMM), which allows up to 180 days, but the officer sets the number and stamps of 30 to 90 days are common, so ask for your full stay and carry an onward ticket. You cannot extend an FMM inside Mexico. For longer stays, apply for Temporary Residency at a Mexican consulate before you fly; you need roughly US$4,300 a month in income over six months or about US$72,000 in savings, so check your consulate's current figure.
