Reykjavik sits at 64°N, the northernmost capital of any sovereign nation, a city of roughly 139,000 pressed between the North Atlantic and a sawtooth ridge that on clear days looks close enough to touch. The settlement dates to 874 AD when Ingólfur Arnarson, following Norse custom, tossed his high-seat pillars overboard and built where they washed ashore, an origin story the city takes seriously enough to maintain his statue on Arnarhóll hill above the old harbour. For most of its history Reykjavik was a small trading post under Danish rule; its transformation into a proper capital came after Iceland's independence in 1944, and the boom decades that turned a fishing town into a city with a national university, a concert hall clad in glass hexagons, and a coffee-per-capita rate that rivals Helsinki's. The neighbourhood locals call 101, the downtown postal code, is where most first-time visitors spend their days, a compact grid of corrugated-iron houses painted in reds and greens and blues running from the harbour up to Hallgrímskirkja, the concrete church whose silhouette doubles as the city's logo. West of 101, Vesturbær is quieter, residential, home to the university and the municipal swimming pools where Icelanders do their real socialising in geothermally heated water regardless of season. East toward Laugavegur and into Hlemmur the mood shifts younger, with record shops and ramen bars that arrived alongside a sharp rise in tourism over the past decade. A first visit recalibrates your sense of daylight: in June the sun barely dips below the horizon; in December you get four hours of grey twilight. The city runs almost entirely on geothermal and hydroelectric power, so the air carries nothing worse than a faint sulphur note from the hot water pipes, and the tap water is among the cleanest you will drink anywhere.
